The animal print trend continues in just about every room of the house. Animal print bathroom accessories (soap dispenser, toothbrush holder, and waste basket) can easily be purchased. However, these items can also be quite expensive. Instead, consider making over an inexpensive pair into your own set of easy animal print bathroom accessories.
For this project, you will need:
– One plastic soap dispenser with smooth sides (available at home accessory stores)
– One plastic toothbrush holder with smooth sides (available at home accessory stores)
– One plastic waste basket smooth sides (available at home accessory stores)
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other soft cloth
– Rubbing alcohol
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black
– Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
– Craft knife
– Self healing mat
– Animal print scrapbook paper
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Sponge brush
– Newspaper or a large drop cloth
To protect your work area, cover the space with layers of old newspaper or a large drop cloth. Remove the pump mechanism from the soap dispenser and set it aside. Gently sand the outside of the soap dispenser, toothbrush holder, and waste basket with a sheet of fine or medium grit sandpaper. (This should be done with just enough pressure to scuff the outside of the plastic surface.) Wipe away any dust on the surface of the items with a tack cloth or other soft cloth. Apply a very light amount of rubbing alcohol to the cloth and wipe down the plastic surfaces one more time.(The rubbing alcohol will help with paint and glue adherence.)
Turn each of the bathroom accessories upside down. Lightly spray the outside of each with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Wait twenty minutes or so before painting with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black. Dry for an hour, add a second coat, and dry for an additional three to four hours.
Use a ruler and pencil to determine how much animal print scrapbook paper you will need to cover the surface of the three bathroom accessories. Cut out each piece carefully using a craft knife and a self healing mat. With a sponge brush, apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the outside of the soap dispenser. Apply an additional amount of glue to the back of the animal print paper and adhere it to the accessory. Smooth the paper with your fingertips or a popsicle stick to prevent any wrinkling and/or bubbling. Repeat this for the outside of the toothbrush holder and the outside of the waste basket. Let the piece dry completely. (Most likely, this will take overnight.) Spray the project pieces with Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Spray and enjoy.
TIP: After the acrylic spray, add jewels or rhinestones with a hot glue gun if desired.
