A headboard is the center piece of your bed. It reflects who we are and what styles we enjoy. It also ties a bedroom together and matches furniture. But when styles become outdated, newer and better bedroom furniture become a want. Don’t throw out or give away your old bed’s headboard, recycle it by giving it a headboard makeover.
Paint Although paint may seem like the most obvious of choices, there are acceptable methods for painting certain headboard materials. For instance, wood, once sanded and primed, will accept nearly any paint color. However, the opposite holds true for metal headboards. These must be sanded, primed and painted with several successive coats of metal paint.
After a suitable paint is chosen to be applied to the headboard restoration project, a specific pattern and style can be selected to further optimize the use of paint. How to Create Antique and Distressed Finishes can help with techniques for aging and distressing paint. Creating a Suede Finish is easy with this article and a few materials. Other fantastic finishes include Antique Crackle, Terra Cotta, Metallic, and Sea Sponge just to name a few.
Engraving and Burning Since the majority of headboards are wood, engraving and wood burning are all viable methods of transforming an ordinary headboard into an extraordinary headboard. Wood burners, engravers and handheld rotary tools all can be easily manipulated professionally with a steady hand and a good template. Use tracing paper and carbon paper to transfer your homemade designs onto the headboard.
My favorite tool for manipulating wood into artistic masterpieces is the Dremel. This powerful handheld rotary tool can be used in company with a wide variety of bits. With such a huge variety of bits, carving and engraving can be taken to the next level of professionalism; all out of your garage workshop.
Etching Acid etching can produce the same desired effect of engraving and wood burning on other materials like metal, fiberglass, plastic and other composite materials. Applying muratic acid can be extremely dangerous and should only be done in a well ventilated area with proper eye protection (face shield), respirator, gloves and apron.
