Hard Knocks, Season 6 will premiere on HBO on August 11, featuring the training camp happenings of the New York Jets over five episodes. This close to hour long program (without commercials) uses NFL Films to document the hits, the conflicts, the cuts, etc. that occur before the regular season begins. For one team to air a bit more of their inner workings and dirty laundry is a treat for football fans, who eagerly await the start of a new season. But what’s been the ultimate fate of the four past teams that have been featured, including the Dallas Cowboys twice?
Is Being Featured on Hard Knocks Good Luck for NFL Teams?
For 2010, NFL Films is planning to shoot over 1,000 hours of video at the Jets’ training camp just to get about five hours worth of programming, according to HBO. Rex Ryan’s team is coming off a season in which they sailed through the playoffs as a Wild Card team, but fell short of going to Super Bowl by losing to the Indianapolis Colts 30-17 in the AFC Championship game, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com.
Stats shown at Pro-Fooball-Reference.com show that not one team featured in the HBO Sports series has ever made it to the Super Bowl the year they were featured. The Baltimore Ravens were the first team to be featured nine years ago in 2001. The team finished 2nd in the AFC Central Division with a record of 10-6, and won their first playoff game against Miami 20-3, but lost in the Division round 27-10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The next year, the Dallas Cowboys got their first Hard Knocks exposure, and finished a dismal 5-11. Hard Knocks didn’t return until 2007, and featured a rather hapless Kansas City Chiefs team that would only win four games. The Cowboys returned again in 2008, and failed to make the playoffs with an underachieving 9-7 record. Last season, some of Chad Ochocinco’s pre-season doings were featured for a Cincinnati Bengals club that would win the AFC North Division but then get thumped by this year’s Hard Knocks team, the Jets, 24-14 in the AFC Wild Card game.
So should NFL teams be wary of letting NFL Films and HBO feature them in the pre-season if they want to be in the Super Bowl? Or will the Jets buck the trend this year?
