Hunter by Dido
When looking for happy break-up songs, one of my personal favorites is Hunter by Dido. From my perspective, this break-up song tells the story of a controlling, overbearing tyrant and the woman that desperately wants out of his grip. The haunting lyrics say, “I want to be a hunter again. I want to see the world alone again – to take a chance on life again, so let me go.” It is a powerful song with a powerful message, and it can be considered happy for those that want to take a chance on life again. Of all break-up songs I know, this is one of my favorites to sing along with, and it has a great deal of meaning – especially for those that once felt controlled.
She Hates Me by Puddle of Mud
Break-up songs from the perspective of the loser in the relationship are also perfect when looking for something happy and upbeat. She Hates Me by Puddle of Mud is one of the best break-up songs to sing along to, and it offers a great lyrical message to send to someone hated. The lyrics say, “She was queen for about an hour. After that, the shit got sour. She took all I ever had. No sign of guilt, no feeling bad.” The best line of all is, “She f***ing hates me.” This song that can be perceived as happy by many, ultimately sums up the feelings that are a direct result of a relationship gone very sour.
She Will be Loved by Maroon 5
Some feel all is lost when they break-up with someone, but all is certainly not lost. It is just a temporary setback and a glitch in life. A break-up provides the opportunity to find new and lasting love – if love is truly desired. She Will be Loved by Maroon 5 is another fantastic break-up song that can be perceived as happy. The lyrics, “I don’t mind spending everyday out on your corner in the pouring rain. Look for the girl with the broken smile. Ask her if she wants to stay awhile. And she will be loved. She will be loved.” This happy song sends a positive message that says she will find love again. The video that goes with the song is also a personal favorite.
Free Falling by Tom Petty
When looking for happy break-up songs, consider Free Falling by Tom Petty. One word sums up the feeling of someone that is more than happy to break-up with a not-so-significant other, and it is the word free. Leaving a bad relationship and starting over can be a happy time, and songs that fit the occasion should be played instead of sappy sad songs that are nothing more than depressing. The lyrics say, “I’m a bad boy, cause I don’t even miss her. I’m a bad boy, for breaking her heart.” For the listener, this sentiment can apply to a man or a woman.
Diggin’ up Bones by Randy Travis
For those with a penchant for happy country music with a break-up theme, Diggin’ up Bones by Randy Travis is a good choice. I am not at all a fan of country music, but I personally love the song. It is catchy, and the words fit the happy break-up theme that is perfect to crank up and listen to while enjoying a cold beer. The lyrics say, “Then I went through the jewelry and I found our wedding rings. I put mine on my finger, and I gave yours a fling.” Even though I would never again put on my wedding ring, the part about giving the other one a fling makes it one of the best feel-good songs for those that would love to do this. Giving the ring a fling is the next best thing to imagining giving the ex a fling.
I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
Who could forget the classic 70’s song by Gloria Gaynor entitled I Will Survive? It is probably the most played break-up song of the past and present. The lyrics say, “Weren’t you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye? Did you think I’d crumble? Did you think I’d lay down and die? Oh no not I! I will survive”. No explanation is necessary for the lyrics in this happy yet powerful break-up song.
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by U2
Many people still have not found what they are looking for, and the song entitled I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by U2 can be considered a happy break-up song. It is a catchy upbeat tune that can be turned up and belted out with real feeling. The line, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” can fit many scenarios, and it is repeated eight times in the song. For some, including myself, it cannot be repeated enough after a break-up.
No Surprise by Daughtry
For many people, a break-up it not at all a surprise, and the song entitled No Surprise by Daughtry is a great theme song for anyone happy to be out of a bad relationship. It is a happy song to play after a break-up because of the meaningful lyrics. They say, “The kiss goodnight, it comes with me. Both wrong and right – our memories. The whispering before we sleep, just one more thing that you can’t keep.” This happy break-up song has a lot of meaning, and it can be considered happy since the aforementioned line is seasoned with a dash of sarcasm and a pinch of egotism.
Perfectly Lonely by John Mayer
The title of this John Mayer song does not sound happy, but the lyrics can be perceived as happy. Not everyone wants a significant other in his or her life, and this song is the quintessence of single life. The lyrics say, “I see friends around from time to time – when their ladies let them slip away”. This line sums up how many people feel that are tied down by another person. Their single friends are completely free.
Celebrate freedom with break-up songs such as the ten songs listed above. Be happy you are free to slip away. You will survive! Take a chance on life again, and have fun singing and enjoying happy break-up songs instead of thinking back on the way it all ended.

One man or woman’s sad tune is another man or woman’s happy jingle. My selections were inspired by my ex husband. I believe in Karma, and good or bad, may he get what he deserves in this life. As for me, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.
