Looking for a fun and inventive way for your children to decorate for Halloween without spending a lot of money? Children have more fun at Halloween if they get to make crafts to display and decorate with. These simple paper plate crafts are super cute to decorate your home for fall, or your child’s classroom and they can even be used for your child to bring Halloween goodies to school. Here are some easy crafts for you and your children to be creative with some paper plates for the spookiest time of year.
Pipe Cleaners (White, Black, Orange or Purple)
Colored Paper Plates (I used 7 inch, black, white, orange, red)
Construction paper (Multi color pack)
Heavy cans or something similar to hold plates down as they dry
Candy and Goodies To Put in Goody Holders (I used pencils, stickers and lollipops)
Step 1 – You take two of the 7 inch black plates. One you leave intact the other you cut in half. You then glue half of the cut plate to the bottom of the intact black paper plate. To help keep the edges of the plates together so they would stick well while drying I secured them with little plastic paper clips all the way around the edges.
Step 2 – While the plates I glued together in step one was drying I made ears for the cat. With the other half of the cut up black paper plate I cut out triangle ears for my cat. I actually cut out quite a few since I was making a lot of these for Halloween. Then I glued them on the paper plates that were still drying, and also secured them with paper clips to be sure they would stay until done.
Step 3 – To make the smile on the cat I used white construction paper. I used half of a cut up paper plate as a template. I fit the white construction paper just to the inside groove of the paper plate, as you can see in my photo. I let my children draw the cats huge smile with a think black marker, as you can see the teeth are not perfect, but that makes the cat interesting. Then I glued the cats white smile and set a large can on it to help hold down all the edges while it dried.
Step 4 – While we allowed all the pieces we had done so far to dry we cut out the eyes for the cat out of construction paper. Then a triangle nose, also out of construction paper. Then I took pipe cleaners and cut them in thirds to make them a good length. The shape of the cat eyes and length of his whiskers are up to you. My children had a lot of fun picking different colored construction paper for the cats eyes, pupils and nose.
Step 5 – By this time we were able to remove all the paper clips off the cat the edges and ears were dry. We then glued the cat eyes then pupils and nose to her face. For the whiskers I twisted the three ends of the pipe cleaners together slightly before I glued them on. This helps keep them together, and makes them easier to glue to the plate. For the whiskers you should definitely use something heavy to weight them as they dry. Now all you need to do is allow it to dry and you have your cute Halloween Black cat paper plate craft to enjoy.
Step 1 – You follow step one above for the cat paper plate Halloween craft only this time you use two orange plates instead of black.
Step 2 – In this step we took black construction paper to make the black part of the pumpkins toothy grin. I cut the black construction paper to fit inside the lip of the paper plate. Just as we did above for the black cat. My children had a fun cutting out different size holes for the teeth. We then glued his toothy grin on the plate and weighted it down with a can to ensure it stuck well as it dried.
Step 3 – While the pumpkin paper plates were drying we cut out his triangle eyes and nose from black construction paper. I then cut out a couple of green leaves for his stem. I used a black marker to draw veins on the leaves. My children then glued the eyes and nose on his face. I glued the leaves on at the top just and secured the leaves with plastic paper clips. Then I put a can on the eyes and nose of the pumpkin and we let it sit to dry. The pumpkin paper plate craft is super easy and fun, all children love to make pumpkins for fall and Halloween. We made extra ones for our holiday decorations for around the house.
Step 1 – For the bat you need one red paper plate and two black paper plates. You leave the red paper plate in one piece since it is the base of your Halloween bat. Then you cut one of the black paper plates in half and glue to the red plate as we did for the cat and pumpkin. And as before I secured the edges with paper clips as it dried.
Step 2 – While the bat background was drying I cut the bat wings out of the other black paper plate. Each bat wing can be cut out of half of one of the black paper plates, I just free handed the wing, I am no artist it was not too difficult to do. Then I stapled the ends of the bat wings on the paper plates, you just need to be sure to use only a couple of staples and they will be covered with the bat eyes when you put them on.
Step 3 – While everything we had done so far was drying my children started to cut out the eyes, fangs and ears. From black construction paper they cut out triangle ears, white construction paper is what we used for the long triangle fangs. For the eyes and the pupils I let them choose, they picked yellow for the eyes and red for the pupils. Then we glued them on, be sure the eyes cover your staples from the wings so they will not be visible. I again used a heavy can to weight it all down to dry. The bat paper plate Halloween craft takes a little extra to make the wings but he is worth it, not only is he cute but unique.
These Halloween paper plate crafts are not very expensive and are great fun for children to make. They are not only a wonderful idea for your home but for teachers to use at school in their class, or even for a youth or church group. Once you are done with your cat, pumpkin and bat paper plate creations you can use them as decorations or even as candy and goodie holders. You can personalizes them by use in a marker to write your children’s classmates or friends names on the back to give them out. I stuck a couple of Halloween pencils in one, a sheet of stickers in some and Dum Dum lollipops in the others. They do not hold a ton of candy which is perfect, most parents do not want their children loaded up with candy on Halloween. They are the perfect fall and Halloween decoration that all children can make and enjoy.
