Add a bit of spectacular spook to the front of your home this Halloween by creating one of these “Witch Way” yard signs! This adorable project takes little effort or expense to create, but will show your trick-or-treaters the perfect path to the candy bowl.
For this project, you will need (per sign):
– One piece of 1/2 inch thick plywood
– Wooden ruler
– Saw to cut wood
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other type of soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Pumpkin Orange
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Bright Idea
– Lettering stencils
– Witch silhouette stencil or metal cookie cutter
– Masking tape
– Craft knife
– Wood glue
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
To protect your work area during the crafting of this Halloween decoration, it is highly advised to first cover the space with a few layers of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. With a ruler and pencil, measure and mark a twelve inch square piece on the 1/2 thick plywood. Using a saw tool, cut the wood square out. Gently sand the edges and surface of the wood using medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust or debris on the plywood with a tack cloth or other type of soft cloth. Repeat the sanding and wiping process with the wooden ruler.
Lay both wooden pieces out flat on the work area. Prime both sides of the wood using a thick coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the primer dry for several hours before proceeding. Paint the ruler piece with four to five coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black. Paint the plywood square with four to five coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Pumpkin Orange. Make sure no wood grain shows through the orange paint. Dry both pieces overnight.
In pencil, use the lettering stencils to trace the words “Witch Way” and an arrow onto the orange painted piece. In addition, trace the witch silhouette from either a stencil or a metal cookie cutter onto the piece. Use masking tape to cover all exposed areas except the designs. (Trim with a craft knife, as needed.) Paint the exposed lettering and witch design using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Bright Idea. Add seven to eight coats of this yellow paint. Dry for several hours.
Attach the black painted ruler to the plywood piece with wood glue. Dry completely before inserting the Halloween sign into a flower pot or soft dirt and enjoying.
