Hear ye, hear ye, a meaty, delicious turkey leg awaits ye and all ye have to do to get it is to travel to 16th century Europe. Luckily, the 17th Annual Carolina Renaissance Festival and Artisan Marketplace in Davidson, North Carolina has ye covered.
The 2010 Renaissance Festival will run seven weekends from 10 am to 5:30 pm, beginning October 9th and ending November 21st. That’s when 22 acres of meadow and forest are transformed into a 16th Century European Marketplace, complete with castles, pubs, kitchens and cottages.
Feast Like Royalty at the Renaissance Festival Faire
Be sure to bring your appetite, because if that turkey leg isn’t what you had in mind, there is plenty of other fare, such as Sausage on a Stick, Steak on a Snake, fish and chips or Scotch eggs, all from the King’s Kitchen and Lancer’s.
There are many other purveyors as well, offering coffee, soda, tea, beer, wine, and even champagne. There are pretzels and pickles, both from a cart, and you must sample cheesecake from The Monk’s Bakery or truffles and pecan turtles from The Chocolate Shoppe.
Belly Dance Shoppes and Dragons Carved of Wood
Beside feasting, there are many things to see and do. Watch jousting tournaments, artisan demonstrations and visit shops, such as The Belly Dance Shoppe and Dragonlore, which sells dragons carved from wood.
Ten stages are filled with music shows, and comedy and theatre productions. There are also games of skill and rides, which are pay as you go and range in price from $1 to $5. Take a ride on the World’s Largest Rocking Horse, visit the Dungeon Museum or try the sky high Pirate’s Assault Catapult.
Guide Just For Students
The Renaissance Festival offers a Student Day Program, which is perfect for student field trips. The days are Tuesday, October 12 for elementary and middle school students, Wednesday, October 13 for middle school students, and Thursday, October 14 for middle school and high school students.
The faire has come a long way since its inception in 1994, when it covered just six acres. Today there are myriad costumed characters roaming the village streets, singing songs and telling tall tales. Festival goers can participate by wearing their own costumes.
