The new GSN dating show, Baggage, rises above low expectations. The show begins with a male or female contestant who gets to choose one out of three women or men to go out on a romantic date. However, the three possible dating choices have to reveal their baggage first.
During the first round the three possible daters opens a small suitcase revealing their smallest baggage to break the ice. The second round is called the deal breaker round. In this round, the daters sit on a couch and leave their medium size suitcases on the podiums. Jerry reveals what’s in the suitcases. The suitcases might hold baggage that is a deal breaker, for instance, “I pee in the sink, I can’t get a credit card, or I want to adopt five kids (all three are examples from the show). The contestant picks the baggage that is a deal breaker not knowing which dater it belongs, too. After the contestant makes his/her choice, the three daters must claim their baggage so the audience and contestant will know who was eliminated.
Now we are down to two daters. Jerry Springer takes us on the interrogation couch with the two daters and asks them to justify their baggage. The contestant is given an opportunity to comment or ask additional questions.
In the final round, the two remaining daters reveal their biggest baggage. Now, the contestant has to choose between a man who lives in a boarding house with eight other guys and a 33 year old virgin (real examples from the show). The contestant makes his/her final choice, but the game is not over. A red suitcase is placed on stage that holds the baggage of the contestant. Now, the dater gets to choose if he/she really wants to go out with the contestant who chose them. Jerry plays multiple choice with the audience and ask them what they think the contestant’s heavy red baggage is.
In the April 19th episode, the possible baggage for the male contestant was, does he have a tattoo of his ex-wife on his chest, was he married to two different women at the same time, or did he have sex with a man. In this episode it turned out that the contestant had sex with a man when he was in college. He explained that he got really drunk and things got out of hand. The girl, who shaves her entire face and is obsessed with The Rock, said that his college indiscretion was a deal breaker and sent him packing. Wow, that’s cold.
When the show was advertised I was afraid it would be incredibly lame. Baggage has proved to be very entertaining and cute. Jerry Springer is the perfect host for the show. Baggage is not overly obscene (depending on what you think is obscene). However, some of the singles, who appear on GSN’s Baggage, has serious issues (judging from the baggage they bring on the show). The baggage ranges from trifling to the bizarre; for example, one man kept a freezer full of sperm (it was his), the other guy goes to strip clubs on a regular bases, and the third guy demands his girlfriend to get a full body wax (yes ladies, even down there).
Baggage can’t help people find serious relationships. However, it can provide decent entertainment for the audience and a hot quickie date for the contestants.
