The Grey’s Anatomy season finale 2010 was already built up as a massive event. But the 2010 Grey’s Anatomy season finale already had some major spoilers leaked before it ever aired. The first seven minutes of the episode were leaked online, which contained some pretty major and violent events. Normally, developments like that are kept a secret, but they were revealed to show what kind of crisis would be unfolding, and that no one would be safe for the next two hours. However, although the Grey’s Anatomy season finale put many more regulars in the crossfire, they largely came out alive – albeit scarred in other ways.
Warning: Spoilers follow.
For days, columnists who got a sneak peek at the season six finale teased about how brutal it would be. If that wasn’t enough to make it clear, a clip of the opening act helped as well. In the first few minutes, Meredith found out she was pregnant – then Reed and Alex got shot.
The Grey’s Anatomy season finale 2010 became one of those “shooter on the loose” moments that medical dramas often resort to. This time, the shooter was a widower who was suing the hospital for the death of his wife – then resorted to more drastic measures. One by one, he threatened everyone at Seattle Grace, and even got to shoot a couple of them as well.
However, although Reed was killed to start the carnage, and Charles Percy didn’t survive, the Grey’s Anatomy season finale was more merciful to everyone else. Although several major players were shot, and one of them had an even worse tragedy happen to her, there would be no other major deaths.
Last season’s ending killed George when T.R Knight left, and spared Izzie before Katherine Heigl finally left months ago. With no more contract disputes, the Grey’s Anatomy season finale 2010 didn’t write off any more fan favorites. But it did leave Meredith and Derek in a raw place to start next year, while the Christina/Owen/Teddy triangle came to a head, as did the Arizona/Callie separation.
Aside from the end of the Heigl drama, the show had a relatively quiet year behind the scenes, which is a rare thing. The Grey’s Anatomy season finale actually shook things up without any off-screen scandal or soap opera to help it. After years of controversy, and the occasional intense fan backlash, the hit may have finally stabilized itself heading into season seven.
A few weeks ago, it was hard to imagine that the Grey’s Anatomy season finale 2010 would be the violent and action-packed ending of the season. But even the Lost finale may be hard pressed to shoot and threaten this many regulars – even if they were let off the hook to a point.
