With the 23rd selection in the first round, the Packers were expected to upgrade a defensive backfield that struggled against top-tier quarterbacks in 2009 or find the replacement for aging offensive tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher. For the Packers, they took advantage of what could have been the steal of the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft: Bryan Bulaga, offensive tackle from the University of Iowa.
Green Bay Packers 2010 NFL Draft 1st round pick analysis
Projected on some mock drafts as a potential top five pick to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Green Bay Packers are fortunate to have had the opportunity to select Bulaga toward the end of the first round. Bulaga has the potential to become the starting offensive tackle for the Packers by the start of the 2010 regular season. It may not be the same value as Aaron Rodgers was, but this still was a tremendous value pick for the Packers at 23.
What to expect from Bryan Bulaga
Bryan Bulaga may not be the sexiest pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, but hes one of the most efficient. What Bulaga lacks in athleticism he makes up for in his technician skills and his football intelligence. Out of all the offensive tackles in the draft, Bulaga and Okung have the best ability to become opening day starters for their respective teams in 2010. Bulaga is comparable to a poor man’s Jake Long as he doesn’t have the bodily attributes that Long has, but he plays with the same intensity and mindset.
Friday’s outlook for the Green Bay Packers in the 2010 NFL Draft
The Green Bay Packers still have areas to address on the offensive line and defensive backfield. The Packers still may look into another future replacement at the offensive tackle position. The Packers may also be in the market for interior offensive lineman with Daryn Colledge being an underachieving nuisance. In addition, the Packers also need depth in all areas of their defensive backs and offensive line.
Look for the Packers to address these areas in the second and third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Also, don’t be surprised if the Packers look to add another linebacker to their roster, especially if Sergio Kindle or Daryl Washington continues to fall. Overall, the Packers should be ecstatic about stealing Bryan Bulaga at the 23rd pick. So far, he is probably the best value pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.
