Artist’s block can happen to the most creative people, but anyone can use a few easy strategies to stay motivated and inspired in crafting. Try some of the techniques below to help maintain creative focus.
Create an inspiration board to provide artistic direction and ideas. Designers often use inspiration boards to define a look for a clothing collection, but any creative person can use one. An inspiration board consists of quotes, photos, patterns, colors and even found objects that you find inspirational. You can constantly change the inspiration board based on your tastes. By bringing different inspirational items together on one board, an artist can see how those elements can be combined to create something totally new. Most people will be happy with just one inspiration board, but you might also want to try making a new board for each season of the year. This will keep ideas fresh and create different themes throughout your work.
Beyond using an inspiration board, you can also use books to find ideas for a work of art. To try this technique, grab any book and write down its last page number. Next write down two other numbers. The first number should be between one and the number that equals the total pages in the book. The second number should be from one to ten. Now flip to the page that corresponds with the first number. Start at the top of that page and count down the lines until you count to the second number. So if the numbers were 100 and 5, you would flip to page 100 and count down to line five on that page. Find the first sentence that starts on the line and use that sentence as inspiration for an art project. This technique provides a random art prompt that can help to take artwork in an entirely new direction. This process can also be used repeatedly with a different outcome each time.
Finally, you can use master artworks as creative inspiration. Try looking at the work of two artists whose work you admire, but who have very differing styles. Try picking one element from each artist and combining them to make a new work of art. For instance, you could take Van Gogh’s subject matter in Starry Night and paint it in the cubist style of Picasso. You could combine the bright color palette of Chagall with the paper lanterns of Isamu Noguchi. Use art web sites and books as inspiration and think of ways to combine two styles of work that you admire.
Finding creative ideas can be challenging at times, but anyone can use the tips above to get out of a creative rut. You might even discover new artistic paths that have yet to be explored.
