“What are great potty training ideas for boys, ” the frustrated parent asks. “The best potty training ideas for boys is any potty idea that works,” answers the individual who has been there and done that by applying so many methods he or she lost count. It may sound that simple but it is really not.
The bottom line is kids, boys or girls, are going to learn to potty at their own rate. Ask any pediatrician about so called tricks of the trade and they will tell you the same thing. Great potty training ideas are any ideas that work. There are a multitude of best potty training ideas out there composed by a multitude of different parents who finally passed the often frustrating parental test of character.
Great potty training ideas seem very abundant on the Internet. But how will you know which one is the absolute best potty training idea for your son(or boy)? Should trial and error be the simple rule? Or will you be the lucky parent who inexplicably gets it right on the very first try? Parents have different approaches that tend to yield different results. There doesn’t seem to be on great potty training method that can be applied to each kid.
Here are some of the “great potty training” ideas I’ve heard consistently from parents who have success.
Throw A Party When They Potty
This time tested reward system seems to get the nod from many parents. When your son or daughter goes potty for the first time, make sure you have rewards handy. Some suggest throwing a potty party! Some suggest having treats or stickers available. This great potty training idea seems to make sense-if you can get them to go the first time around.
Head To Potty First Thing Every Morning
Make going to potty a routine. It’s good to be consistent and many parents claim this is the first step in hurdling the potty training method with your son or daughter. Consistency and consistency typically wins over any amount of stubborn in your child. This great potty training idea can be crucial if you are struggling to get to square one.
Let Your Son Watch Other Children or You Go to Potty
This certainly goes against everything we are taught about respecting other people in the privacy of a bathroom. But it seems as if most parents conclude that having a son or daughter in day care helps them learn in a more efficient way by seeing that others do it, too. In other words, it’s okay to go potty(or translate into teen speech, “it’s cool to go potty!”). Children who are not in day care generally seem to have a tougher go of it when they don’t see potty training as the normal thing to do. Sometimes you have to teach your kids by allowing them to watch you do it first. It might seem awkward but it’s the most natural thing anyone does. Think about it-it’s nothing parents should be embarrassed about either. Teaching your son or daughter to go potty is inevitable and essential. So why not show him or her practical experiences?
Change Into Underwear Instead Of Diapers
The biggest hurdle for kids is to leave the comfort of going potty in their diapers. One great potty training idea for kids is to allow them to wear their favorite character underwear. The son or daughter may love their Transformers or Barbie underwear so much that they can’t bare to go potty and dirty them up. Many people swear by this potty training method.
Visit The Potty Every 20 Minutes Until They Get It
Want to test the patience of your 2 or 3 year old? Make them sit on the potty 2-3 times an hour until they realize what it’s for. This might be the “I’m more stubborn than you” method but some parents really admit they’ve used the constant consistency method. This might actually wear the parent out more than it does the actual kid. Still, parents say that kids will start telling them when they have to go sooner than later using this method.
Have Kids Urinate On Cereal In Potty
Okay, this isn’t my preferred best potty training method but some parents claim this potty training method is the way to go. Imagine being a 2 or 3 year old and having the ability to sink Cheerios under the water? If your son is big enough to stand above the toilet, this cereal trick might just be the right potty training method for the short term. Finding out how to finally get rid of the cereal could be the next hurdle in question!
Watch Potty Time Videos
There are several potty time videos on the net. You don’t have to be a parental genius to figure out that Elmo can make potty time look cool. This won’t always lead to success as I have found, but it certainly seemed to get my son in the mood for some portion of time. It’s a good potty training idea to make the experience as positive as possible for all of those involved.
Use A Gimmick Potty
Some parents spend tons of money on a gimmick potty. Some have a lot of luck while others don’t have the same response. A gimmick potty, like a baseball potty with a sound activated flush, could be a great thing for kids learning to potty. It could also be a distraction. Or in our case, your son might like it so much that he certainly doesn’t want to damage it by using it for potty! Still some parents attest to the gimmick potty trick.
That’s it for my great potty training ideas. Teaching your son or daughter to go potty certainly calls for a tremendous amount of patience, good timing and a lot of luck. Please post your own great potty training ideas for boys or girls below in the comment section!
