If you are planning a trip to Destin, Florida, or if you are new to the area, one of the key places to go for a great night is Baytowne Wharf. This is an awesome place located in the Sandestin Area off HWY 98 about 3 miles east of Silver Sands Factory Outlet Mall. It is perfect for a fun date or a night on the town with all the kids. They will love it (and so will you.)
The Set Up
Upon entering the gates of Baytowne, you will immediately feel the pristine care taken of all Baytowne Grounds; the golf course, the scenic golf cart baths and bike trails, the condo’s, the lakes and homes. But shortly in to the winding shady drive, you will find signs to the Shopping Village of Baytown Wharf; the place to be. There is a parking garage, valet and a shuttle bus if all near lots are full.
Once out of the car, you will walk through the brick archway to the foot of a gorgeous, picturesque fountain that sits atop the lush green lawn of the bandstand. Brick streets, for strolling only, spring off to the left and right. The two and three story buildings lining the streets, light up at night like an old bustling town square (except newer, cleaner and better funded.) The village makes a complete circle around a cove of the Bay (Fisherman’s Cove), easily walked in a half hour…unless of course you stop – and stop you will to take in all sights and sounds.
Entertainment
Baytowne offers fireworks, bands, magicians, big screen movies on the lawn and more for free. The minute you walk in, there will be something to entertain you at the main grandstand. For an events calendar, visit their website: http://www.baytownewharf.com/
The main grandstand is only part of the entertainment. Several restaurants and bars in the village will host their own live music. In addition, there are open air vendors and performers that spotlight great things to stop and watch, such as a professional sandcastle maker who builds the best castle ever, right before your eyes.
Zip Line and Ropes Course
If it is thrills you seek, there are two attractions you can’t miss. You can zip line over the cove and back high above the waters. Even if you elect not to, it is total entertainment to watch people flying through the air squealing with delight, all evening.
There is also a ropes course for kids that they will beg to do in between shops. Safely harnessed in, they can swing and climb the course – both a mental and physical challenge for those 13 and under.
Shop the Shops
There is hardly anything mainstream about Baytowne. Most all of the shops are unique and charming. A tiny magic shop is a kid favorite, but there are boutiques and galleries that are sure to deliver unique souvenirs in great taste.
For shopping breaks, Ice cream parlors, pizza parlors, seafood and more abound as most all restaurants take advantage of the scenic bay view. Dinner on the water can be romantic and spirited; your choice at Baytowne!
Great Playground
Sometimes, mom and dad need a little R and R on vacation, too. Baytowne designers planned for that by placing an enormous playground by an outdoor cantina. You can watch the kids romp and run and wear themselves out swinging and climbing on this enormous wooden structure with great kid appeal – while you listen to live tunes and kick back for a drink.
If you have come to Destin for years, or are coming for the first time, The Village of Baytowne Wharf is a night on the town that won’t disappoint!
