My parents are both retired – – my father retired eight years ago and my mother three years ago. I believe my father was born working and has worked hard his entire life. He was only retired six months before he began looking for another job – – he said he could not just sit around the house and “relax”. Unfortunately, because of the economy my parents find it necessary to work during their retirement because their investments are not as healthy due to the stock market. Whether it is to keep busy or to meet financial needs, more senior citizens are rejoining the workforce after retirement than ever before. Senior citizens can offer several benefits to employers that many younger employees lack such as stability, maturity and experience. There are great jobs for senior citizens in many different job fields.
My father has had two different jobs after retiring that have been very good for him for several reasons. The most recent job my father has had in his senior years has been driving cars for a car rental agency. Even though my father is in very good health for seventy-one, he cannot do the same physical labor he did twenty years ago. Driving cars for a rental car agency is a perfect job for senior citizens like my father who are excellent drivers. The hours are usually flexible and the work is not physically demanding. My father also cleaned the interior of the vehicles as they were returned – – I did worry more about him on very hot days doing that but he enjoyed it and did well. He also drove the shuttle bus to and from the airport (that was always good because he got great tips).
Another great job for senior citizens also has to do with driving – – courier service. I would often go to the post office in the mornings on my way to my office and I noticed a group of senior citizens were always in the lobby chatting. I began to pay more attention to them and realized they were working for various courier services. They would pick up mail from the post office boxes for clients and then deliver the mail to the clients’ offices throughout the day. I asked one of the senior citizens about his job one day and he told me he had retired at sixty-two but had gotten bored very quickly with retirement. He said he had been working for the courier service for eight years and really enjoyed his job. He did the mail routes in the mornings and had the afternoons off. Since most senior citizens are very familiar with businesses, streets and directions, being a courier is a great job for senior citizens.
In addition to being a courier, another great job for senior citizens is a delivery person. My aunt and uncle, both retired, worked for a florist delivering flowers. My uncle would drive the van and my aunt would generally take the delivery into the office or up to the door of a home because my uncle suffers from problems with his knees that make walking difficult. They really enjoyed delivering the flowers and the opportunity to spend their days together – – they also made great tips too.
My mother retired at sixty-five; however, because of insurance costs she needed another source of income in addition to her social security. She began staying with an older woman in our church that needed a companion during the day. This is another great job for senior citizens – – staying with another senior citizen who needs care during the day. Mrs. Smith did not need a nurse or full-time care; however, she did require someone to stay with her during the day to make sure she took her medications, cook her meals and take her to any doctor’s appointments that she had scheduled.
