It has been a while since I donned swim trunks and headed to the beach. My life as of late has been spent on the road going from town to town to review bed and breakfasts. For the moment I have stopped my travels and am spending time with family in South Carolina. A few days ago my family decided to spend a day at the beach. I brought my trunks and a towel and thought that would be enough. Boy was I wrong. Going to the beach is a day long event and you need to be prepared; here’s how.
Be Beach Prepared: The Basics: The minimum you will need to take with you when you hit the beach is more than you think. A towel is good but if you plan on swimming then you may want to bring two so you have a place to sit and a sand free towel to dry off with. Sunscreen is mandatory at a day at the beach otherwise you will end up not only with skin damage but a painful burn.
Be Beach Prepared: Travel Extras: Walking on the beach to find the right spot can take a few if not many minutes. You do not want to be juggling all your accoutrements so get a beach bag. You can throw in all your basics and navigate to your space of choice. Travel extras for a day at the beach also include a small zip lock or carry all bag to put important things such as your wallet, keys, watch, phone or glasses in so they are safely with you but out of the way of the sand.
Be Beach Prepared: Comfort Items: Yes of course with the above two categories you are ready to spend a day on the sand but will you have the best time? Bring a chair with you to sit in so your bum is not on the sand. Bring a cooler with some sodas, water, sandwiches, snacks and other goodies to keep you fueled while in the sun. Bring a hat for when you have had enough sun on your face and neck but want to get your legs tanned. Bring a book or an iPod to keep you entertained. Leave an extra towel and sweatshirt in your car so that when you get back and are ready to go you do not get your seat all wet and are not too cold now that you are out of the direct sun.
Be Beach Prepared: Friendly Items: Are you going to spend the day at the beach with friends? Why not bring a few extra towels and chairs? Bring an umbrella and you will be able to have a well staked out spot so you can be in the sun or in the shade. Bring a pail and shovel and go back to being a kid and build a sand castle. Bring a few magazines so everyone can share. Bring a Frisbee or ball and get all your friends up for a game in or out of the water. Bring a camera to catch all the good times.
Be Beach Prepared: Conclusion: This summer clean out the trunk of your car and stash some great beach items so you are ready for a great day in the sun. The beach is a fun, usually free, way to spend a great summer day if you are prepared.
