The Glee finale officially closes the network TV season. Because the Glee finale arrives about two weeks after every other network finale, that is quite fitting. The show technically began at the end of the 2008-09 season, with its now famous pilot first airing over a year ago. From the start, the musical hit did things differently, and now, thanks to its late midseason start, it will end season one in June with the spotlight all to itself. But, at the least, this means that the long wait after the Glee finale will be just a few weeks shorter.
Warning: Spoilers follow
Just like in the first half of the season, the second half of Glee‘s first year will close with a long-awaited showdown. Back in December, the New Directions closed the first 13 episodes by winning at sectionals, despite the machinations of Sue Sylvester. Now, for the official Glee finale, the challenges are the same, only this time they’re at regionals.
This time around, the challenge is even bigger, as the club finally squares off with all-powerful Vocal Adrenaline. The machinations of star singer Jesse St. James and coach Shelby Corcoran nearly sunk the club, but a climactic funk number last week gave the New Directions their edge back. Yet, the Glee finale still promises an uphill battle ahead.
Whereas Sue worked behind the scenes to help the competition cheat at sectionals, she is front and center at regionals as a celebrity judge. Therefore, the only hope is to impress fellow judges – and past Glee special guests – Olivia Newton John and Josh Groban.
But, of course, the Glee finale has more than just the competition. After a frustrating back nine for Rachel and Finn fans, the departure of Jesse may bring the star-crossed couple back on track. But, Will and Emma fans might have to stay patient, as their trials are far from over. And, of course, despite staying back the entire season, Quinn’s baby is finally set to emerge at the worst time.
After a year of Journey, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Sue’s corner, and the rise of Gleeks in general, the Glee finale puts a cap on one of TV’s biggest debut seasons. Naturally, the episode is called “Journey,” given the long journey of the gang, and the name of the band that first sung their most famous hit. So, of course, the music of Journey will play a part in the end, as it did 12 ½ months ago at the beginning.
The Glee finale concludes the last leg of the Season One journey tonight, starting at 8:59 pm est on FOX.
