Genetically engineered foods account for up to 70% of the content in processed foods. Nevertheless, government regulatory agencies have decided that specifying GE foods on nutritional labels is unnecessary. In fact, they claim there is no difference between genetically engineered foods and their natural counterparts. There have been numerous scientific studies that prove otherwise. In fact, genetically engineered foods have been found to cause a wide variety of health problems. Just another great reason to avoid consumption of processed foods.
The Main Culprits
What are the main genetically engineered foods in America? Soybeans and corn are the top two GE foods grown in America. Running a close third and fourth are cotton and rapeseed. I am a vegetarian, due to health concerns and other reasons. Soy is one of the foods I rely on for protein. Now I can’t trust the labeling on soy products. Without proper labeling, I have no way of knowing whether the tofu I am buying comes from genetically modified soy. Rapeseed is canola. When I can’t afford olive oil, I often use canola oil. This concerns me because there is no guarantee that foods I once considered healthy are safe to eat, even when avoiding processed foods. However, since GE foods are prevalent in processed foods, I consider this another reason to avoid them.
Despite what we are told, GE food has been found to cause numerous health risks. Why? A large portion of genetically engineered foods have pesticides built right into their genetic structure. That means they can’t be washed off. When we eat these foods, we ingest pesticides that stay in our system and even regenerate. It doesn’t take a scientist to see the harm this could do to the human body. Studies in rats have shown GE foods to cause severe liver, pancreas and testicular issues. Sheep and other animals eating GE cotton died within a few days. Genetically engineered foods have never been tested on humans, so why are we being told they are OK to eat?
As if the health effects of GE foods were not bad enough there are also numerous environmental concerns. Pesticides genetically bonded to crops that can cross breed into other plants could necessitate even more hazardous weed control measures. It doesn’t take much forethought to see that before long, there will not be a plant on earth that is not genetically modified, either directly or indirectly. Processed foods will be the least of our concerns when all our food has mutated.
A Plea for Change
What are we doing to ourselves here?I urge you to avoid processed foods, soy, corn and canola oil. I urge you to boycott these foods. Send a message to regulatory agencies that it is not OK to mislead us by refusing to label genetically engineered foods. We have a right to know what we are putting in our bodies. Until the regulatory agencies require accurate labeling of GE foods, it’s just another reason to avoid processed food products.
Why the Insistence of Deception?
Refusing the labeling of genetically engineered food is just the latest in a long line of injustices in the name of profit. Genetically engineered food manufacturers insist there is no significant difference in genetically modified food, even though research shows otherwise. They insist that labeling food is pointless and the cost would outweigh the benefits. Soon the cost will be our lives. Send a message to regulatory agencies that it’s not OK to tamper with our food supply. Boycott GE foods and processed foods of questionable origin before it’s too late.
