NBC has alerted America that General McChrystal has now been relived of hisduties in the military. President Obama has stated that McChrystal showed “poor judgment” in the interview with Rolling Stone, notes Politico. Yes, it seems that allowing his team to refer to Vice President Biden by a nickname “Bite Me” would be poor judgment indeed.
So, General Stanley McChrystal is out as head of war operations in Afghanistan. President Obama met with him briefly today. Then McChrystal left the White House prior to the scheduled AfPak strategy meeting.
TalkingPointsMemo reports that when he was asked on the way in to the White House if he’d tendered his resignation, McChrystal answered “come on you know better than that. No. ” So does this mean he was fired?
It remains hard to comprehend why McChrystal blasted Obama and Biden in a Rolling Stone interview. Was he doing a CYA move to try to protect his military reputation during the midst of the chaotic, and failing Afghanistan war? Or was he just fed up and wanted to blast the administration before stepping down?
The military and Rolling Stone magazine are an odd match indeed. Rolling Stone is anti-war and has a pacifist hippie outlook. The reporter for Rolling Stone must have been in a frenzy when he was writing his article. He probably knew as he was writing it that it would bring McChrystal down and end his military career.
Insubordination is not accepted in the military. As leader of the military, Obama really has to take a firm stand on this article. He needs to fire McChrystal. And indeed, he never should have given him the position of leading war operations in Afghanistan in the first place.
McChrystal Withheld Truth from Pat Tillman’s Family
McChrystal has a history of playing with the truth when under pressure. His denial of the truth of the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman was a national disgrace. He knew almost immediately it was a friendly fire death, but he told Tillman’s parents that he was shot and killed by enemy forces.
Pat Tillman, a former NFL player, was one of the most visible men in the military. Whey did McChrystal ever think he could use spin to hide the truth of the real cause of his death, friendly fire?
The Tillman family had to fight hard to get the truth of what happened to their son. That is completely unacceptable. No American family should be treated like that by the American military leadership. Pat Tillman’s mother, Mary Tillman, published a book about her son called “Boots on the Ground by Dusk.” This book is mandatory reading for any family sending a child off to war.
Time to End the Afghanistan War
The Afghanistan war has been lingering on for 9 years. What exactly is it that we’ve accomplished there? Al Qaeda leadership is probably long gone from the country and hiding in Pakistan now. Why are American troops still risking their lives in Afghanistan. What is the goal of this war?
This recent debacle with McChrystal just shows this war has gone on too long with no real purpose any more. The counterinsurgency strategy is not working. And over a thousand American soldiers have died in this war.
The military is wrung out from too many deployments. Veterans are not getting acceptable medical care and psychological counseling. President Obama needs to end the wars.
And as for McChrystal, well Rolling Stone reports he graduated 298 out of a class of 855 cadets. He sure didn’t show leadership at West Point, where he was fond of insubordination. And he isn’t showing leadership now. McChrystal seems petulant, arrogant, and unable to comprehend that the only outcome to the Afghanistan war is failure.
