Geek Pride Day is upon us again. If you’re planning to celebrate the day with your fellow geeks, why not make it an impromptu party? Check out the ideas below, or choose a theme that suits your circle of friends. Happy Geek Pride Day!
Geek Pride Day Party Ideas – Throw a Lan Party
Invite your buddies over for a video gaming extravaganza. Hook your computers up to a network and get your game on. Try first-person shooters like Team Fortress 2 or Call of Duty 4, or play strategy games like Command & Conquer. If DotA is more your speed, you and your friends can fill an in-house game or split into two teams on Battle.net. Co-op or competitive gaming can also be had by console. If you’ve got an extra tv, set up dual consoles and have competitions on Xbox or the Wii.
Geek Pride Day Party Ideas – Tabletop Gaming
Tabletop gaming is a fixture in the geek universe. Perhaps you already have a regularly scheduled Dungeons & Dragons game, or play one of the less popular tabletop games such as Call of Cthulhu or GURPS. Tabletop gaming isn’t restricted to dice games, however. Try HeroClix, Warhammer 40k, or other miniatures. Board games like Risk could make for an evening of fun, or card games such as Magic: The Gathering.
Playing games like these with friends can easily fill a few hours. This can also be a great opportunity to pick up a game you and your buddies haven’t touched for a while, or have never played as a group.
Geek Pride Day Party Ideas – Film Festival
Whether you attend in theaters or schedule a movie marathon at home, this is a fun way to spend Geek Pride Day. If you’re heading to the local cinema, go for a film everyone can agree on. Consider something like Clash of the Titans, especially in 3-D. Head out for dinner before or after the movie, hit a bookstore or coffee shop.
If you’re spending the night at home, pick out a few movies to watch. Make the movie picks majority rule or consider a potluck – have everyone bring a movie, then put them all into a pillowcase and choose two at random. Go for favorite films or the worst ones you can find, or choose movies according to a theme. If you wind up watching a movie you’ve seen countless times, make things interesting. Look online to find one of the many drinking games associated with movies, there’s likely to be one to be designed for your old favorite.
Geek Pride Day Party Ideas – Cosplay Costume Party
Why not throw a costume party? Instead of your traditional Halloween party, make it a cosplay occasion. Dress up as Solid Snake, Harley Quinn or Captain Kirk. If your friends are part of the LARP, Ren Faire or convention crowd, they probably have costumes on hand already. If not, simply dressing up as a character from a favorite film or tv series is likely doable on short notice.
If you’re planning a party at home, stick to party standbys like pizza and finger foods. Serve brightly colored sodas and energy drinks, beers or a signature cocktail like the Incredible Hulk. Keep a few bowls of snacks on hand, depending on the size of your crowd.
