Will Queen Latifah be the next of the many closeted gay celebrities to come out on the cover of a magazine? Jezebel.com reports a rumor that, on May 5, 2010, ‘People’ magazine will feature one of the gay celebrities still trapped in the closet out there on the cover. The website suggests that Queen Latifah could be the magazine’s lovely lesbian cover girl, but why her?
It’s the “Wright” time for Queen Latifah to announce that she’s a lesbian (if she really is)
Queen Latifah does have a movie coming out soon after the May 5, 2010 issue would hit newsstands called ‘Just Wright’ (a romantic comedy about a heterosexual relationship), so her coming out as a lesbian before the film hits theaters could give the movie and her career a little boost (although I doubt the ‘Cover Girl’ spokesmodel, rapper, and actress needs it). Jezebel.com reports that publicist Howard Bragman is behind the alleged uncloseting, and that he plans for the unknown celebrity to follow the announcement with a tour of press appearances, including one on ‘The View’, a similar circuit to that a celebrity promoting a movie might find themselves on.
But what other reasons does Jezebel.com have for assuming that the celebrity could be Queen Latifah?
Rumors that Queen Latifah is a lesbian have been circulating for some time now, perhaps in part because we never hear about her dating anyone (except for rumors that she was in a relationship with her female trainer). When asked about her sexuality, Queen Latifah has simply declined to comment or states that she wants to keep her private life private. However, photos of her and her pals partying with female strippers in ‘The National Enquirer’ definitely raised some eyebrows.
What other celebrities could choose to finally say “I’m gay”?
Of course, Queen Latifah is just one of the many possibilities for “glass closeted” celebrities in Hollywood. These celebrities who may or may not be gay include Anderson Cooper, Ellen Page, and Kevin Spacey, just to name a few that get tongues wagging about on which team they are batting. Jezebel.com has also obtained a list of celebrities represented by the guy behind this alleged publicity stunt, which includes Laila Ali (another celebrity I’ve heard lesbian rumors about in the past, which she denied; she’s also currently married to a man); Ricki Lake (she seems to me to be a bit of a lesbian icon and is currently divorced after being married to a man); Carlos Mencia (married to a woman); and Isaiah Washington (ha!), to name a few. Clients that Howard Bragman has already helped come out to the public include Chaz Bono and Meredith Baxter.
If the allegations that a celebrity will be coming out of the closet on the May 5th issue of ‘People’ magazine are true, whichever of the celebrities out there still living that cramped life in the closet will join the other liberated celebrities that have come out in magazines like Sean Hayes, Adam Lambert, Ellen DeGeneres, Lance Bass, Neil Patrick Harris, and Clay Aiken (the last three of whom all came out to ‘People’). And whether it’s Queen Latifah or another celebrity, it will be nice to see yet one more star letting the world know that being gay is totally okay.
