Bukit Bintang is one of Kuala Lumpur’s main shopping, entertainment and tourist areas. Crammed with shopping malls, restaurants, cafes, movie theaters, specialty stores and supermarkets it’s a popular area with both visitors and locals. If you’re planning on being in the Bukit Bintang area, with so many fun things to see and do, make sure you don’t miss these.
Visit Berjaya Times Square – One of the most popular fun things to do in the Bukit Bintang area is to visit Berjaya Times Square. This enormous shopping mall is next to the Bukit Bintang monorail station and is KL’s largest. But, it’s not just a shopping mall. It also has the biggest indoor amusement park in Malaysia, a huge movie theater complex, karaoke, tons of restaurants, cafes and snack bars and just a fun, lively atmosphere. Spend an afternoon at Berjaya Times Square and, with so much to do, you don’t even have to shop – if you don’t want to.
Eat the Best Supermarket Sushi in KL – A little known secret about the Bukit Bintang area is you can buy the best (and sometimes cheapest) supermarket sushi here. In the Isetan supermarket in the basement of the Lot 10 building there’s an extensive sushi counter with enormous varieties of sushi and sashimi to choose from. The even cooler thing about it is around 8pm, an hour and a half or so before they close, the sushi usually goes on sale. So you can gorge to your heart’s content. And, with your sushi, don’t forget to grab a container of cut fruit too. It’s deliciously fresh and not too high a price.
Shop at Sungei Wang Plaza – Sungei Wang Plaza has more visitors per year than any other shopping mall in Malaysia. Unsurprising really, as it’s an incredible mall. Popular with teenagers and young adults particularly, as the fashion here is so cool (and cheap), families also love it for the hundreds of restaurants, cafes and snack bars. One of the best places to eat is at the Coffee Bean and Tea Love on the ground floor. They do an amazing ham and cheese club sandwich with a side salad and excellent coffee. There’s free Wi-Fi too. And don’t miss shopping at one of the hundreds of DVD stalls. They have everything and the prices are incredible.
Hang out at Starbucks – You don’t even have to be a fan of Starbucks to want to hang out here. Located on Jalan Bukit Bintang, this Starbucks is all outside. Their counter and cash register is outside in a small booth and their seating is in a huge covered outdoor area that’s perfect for people watching. It’s hot, but sometimes worth it just to enjoy the passing crowds.
Eat at the Hawker Stalls on Jalan Alor – Another fun thing to do in the Bukit Bintang area is to eat at one of the hawker stalls on Jalan Alor. Jalan Alor is right behind Jalan Bukit Bintang and is nothing more than a long street lined from side to side with hawker stalls. Every stall has tables and chairs set up so you can eat right there, or grab something to take back to your hotel room. You’ll find superb Malay, Indian and Chinese food and, at only a couple of dollars a plate, you can try just about everything.
Bukit Bintang is bustling, crowded, lively and fun. It’s a great area for kids, teens, young adults and families and, with so much to see and do, you’ll probably find yourself coming back again and again, so you can see and do it all.
