Because many patriotic holidays take place during the warmer months, the summer time is the perfect time to celebrate American heritage. This patriotic garland decoration will be appropriate to brighten your home from Memorial Day to Flag Day to The Fourth of July to Labor Day. Perfect for a party or a picnic, but just as nice as a touch of summer fun indoors, here is how you can make your very own patriotic banner decoration, using felt stars.
You will need:
Red and blue craft felt
– The amount will vary depending on how long you want to your banner to be. If you use the same proportions that I did, you can figure on 7-9 inches of garland for every star, and plan your felt shopping accordingly.
Small white buttons
-I used ¼” pearl shank buttons. You, of course, should use whatever you like. You will want them to be small though, because they have to match the size of the stars and fit within the points.
1/8″ white satin craft ribbon
-This is a useful size if you want to tie the ribbon to the buttons as I did, but you can use wider ribbon and sew them on. Or use twine, or yarn, or raffia, or cording… the possibilities are all up to you.
To get started, print out the star template I’ve provided. My stars are five inches across, so you’ll want to use your picture editing software to size it accordingly before printing. Cut it out, and use fabric disappearing pens to trace it onto your felt. You could use a Sharpie marker like I did for the photos, but I was living dangerously and carefully putting my marked edges to the back side.
Cut the stars out carefully. Felt is a fun material to work with, but its cut edges to tend to be unforgiving showing each stop, start, and stutter made with the scissors. There, that was the hardest part!
Cut your ribbon into about 7″ lengths. Tie a button to each end of each length of ribbon.
Using the tips of a small pair of scissors, cut a tiny slit in each of two opposite arms on each star shape. These will stretch, so start small, and enlarge with tiny snips if need be.
Button the stars together into a garland, using a length of ribbon buttoned through the slits between each red and blue star.
For the hanging loops on the end, cut ribbon about 11″ long and string it through a button. Tie the ends into an overhand knot together, forming a loop. Button these loops onto the stars at either end of the garland.
Hang your patriotic garland decoration in the desired location and enjoy all summer long!
