Over the last few weeks I have been spending a lot of time at my pharmacy, and one day while I was killing some time waiting for my prescriptions to be filled I started to look at some of the unique products available through this store. For a long time I have found products sold here that I can’t find anywhere else, and the latest discovery is a shampoo called Free & Clear Shampoo for Sensitive Skin.
Free & Clear Shampoo for Sensitive Skin comes in a white colored 12 ounce bottle, and the front of the bottle gives the consumer a ton of information about what makes this shampoo different from many others on the market today. The cap has a button on it that opens the spout for easy pouring, and the shampoo itself is clear and totally fragrance free.
If you have ever purchased an “unscented” product only to find that it had an odd scent (this used to happen to me all the time with diaper wipes), then you might know that companies often add a “masking fragrance” to make a product unscented, but Free & Clear Shampoo for Sensitive Skin does not do this, there are honestly no scents added to this shampoo, not even masking scents.
Furthermore, this shampoo contains no dyes, lanolin, fragrance, protein, parabens, or formaldehyde. When I read that I cringed to think that some shampoo might actually contain formaldehyde! Free & Clear is great for those with sensitive skin, eczema, dandruff, or other skin conditions. Also a good choice for those with chemical sensitivities.
Free & Clear Shampoo for Sensitive Skin is pH balanced, and can be used on colored or permed hair. It can be used on all ages, but this is not a tear free shampoo, so don’t be fooled into thinking it won’t sting the eyes, because it will. I would not use this shampoo on children under the age of 2 or 3, I would use a baby shampoo instead.
My husband has eczema and dandruff, and our dermatologist recommends that we use Head & Shoulders, but this Free & Clear shampoo claims it is recommended by dermatologists. I plan on asking our dermatologist about this shampoo the next time we see him.
Since the company prides itself on what their shampoo does not contain, I will list the ingredients for you, so you can decide for yourself if this is right for you. Most people with allergies know when the see the ingredients if it is going to cause them problems or not. Free & Clear Shampoo for Sensitive Skin contains: Water (Purified), Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Sodium Chloride, Cocoamidopropylamine Oxide, PEG 150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, Citric Acid, PEG 12 Dimethicone, Disodium EDTA, Potassium Sorbate.
I had a friend who is allergic to almost every shampoo on the market, and I thought this one would be the answer for her. After she read the ingredients she said that the Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate is actually from coconut oil, and she is allergic to all coconut ingredients, so she could not use this shampoo.
As far as how well this shampoo performs, it does lather up nicely, rinses away cleanly, and leaves the scalp feeling very fresh and clean. After using this shampoo for a couple weeks, you might not want to go back to your old shampoo! It does not have the body building properties of shampoo that contains panthenol, but it’s not too bad. Certainly better than some salon brands I have purchased, and definitely better than most shampoo that can be purchased at the grocery or drug store. It also leaves the hair extremely shiny!
The 12 ounce bottle retails for $10.00, which is a good price, and if this helps your skin condition or allergies, then it is well worth the price. We have found it just as effective as Head & Shoulders is for clearing up eczema and dandruff. You might have a hard time finding this shampoo, this small family owned business is the only store that I have seen it in, and this pharmacy sells a lot of unique products that are not found in very many places.
I really trust my pharmacist, and I’ve noticed that he tries to stock his shelves with products that are natural, therapeutic and fit the alternative or holistic lifestyle.
