Next time you make a batch of cookies, why not paint them! Making cookies paint is quick and easy. Then you and the kids can have fun painting the cookies before you bake them. Painting cookies is a simple way to decorate cookies because you don’t need to work with messy frosting. And painted cookies make a great gift to give to friends and relatives!
To make cookie paint, all you have to do is beat an egg yolk in a small bowl with a fork and add a few drops of food color to the egg yolk. Just remember that the egg yolk is yellow, so when you add food coloring, the color will not be true. But you can play with it and come up with some very nice colors to use to paint your cookies. Use one egg yolk for each color.
Once your cookie paint is ready, all you need are the cookies! You can make your own cookie dough or you can use store bought cookie dough. If you make your own, try making dough that can be rolled out and cut into cute shapes. Cute shapes are always more fun to paint. You can also roll out store bought cookie dough. But if you don’t want to go through rolling out cookie dough and cutting the cookie dough into shapes, you can just flatten the balls of cookie dough or even make dropped cookies (flatten the tops a bit) then paint them.
Paint the cookies using various colors of cookie paint. You can use any craft paint brushed to apply the cookie paint, as long as they are new and clean. Then wash your paint brushed well and put them aside to use for cookie painting only.
After you paint your cookies, bake as directed on the package or according to your recipe. If you like, you can also add colored sugar or candy sprinkles before baking. If you want to tint your own sugar, see my other article 2 Sugar Tricks: How to Tint Sugar and How to Make Powdered Sugar. After baking, you can let the cookies cool and decorate them even more by highlighting your cookie art by adding some frosting piping around your designs.
A great way to give cookies as a gift is to buy a cheap decorative tin at your local dollar store, line it with some colorful plastic wrap and fill it with your painted cookies! Or you can buy little plastic bags and just bag up the cookies and add some curling ribbon and a gift tag. Painted cookies also make great party favors for kids and adults both!
