Florida residents have good reason to be concerned over the impact from the BP oil spill. Since the start of the crisis 56 days ago, estimates on the size of the spill have contiuned to grow. Along with that, questions have been raised about the efficiency of BP’s efforts to contain the Deepwater Horizon gusher.
Independent scientists now agree that the true spill rate, before the riser pipe was cut off last week, was between 20,000 and 40,000 barrels a day.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist has tried to reassure his constituents that there is no reason to panic, but beach-side Panhandle residents feel the governor is spewing empty words.
Businesses in the Tampa Bay area have already been affected by the BP oil leak. Hotel reservations have been cancelled up and down the coast, from the Panhandle to the Weeki Wachee area resorts and southward.
The National National Center for Atmospheric Research has generated a computer model that shows the projected path of the BP oil Spill. With low expectations for stopping the leak in less then 2 months, it appears unlikely that any part of Florida will be able to avoid being touched in some way by the massive oil slick.
Currently, the only viable option for an end to the gushing Deepwater Horizon well lies in 2 relief wells, which will not be completed for another 60 days, perhaps longer.
