My husband and I often fantasize on what I would do if either one of us came in to a lot of money. I say fantasize because I am pretty sure it won’t happen (at least not any time soon!) We would probably do the usual things everyone does, i.e. pay off our bills first, buy us each a new car, take a vacation, but there are a few things that people don’t usually think of when they have a windfall. My list would contain the following.
#1. Donate money to my church. My church, like many others, does a lot of charity work for the community. I think that if I were so blessed by the Lord, I would most definitely want to give back to Him. Think of the many people that can be fed, clothed, and receive the Good News of our Lord. Those people who are touched in such a way, will hopefully pay it forward to others. Think of how wonderful this country could be if everyone thought of someone other than themselves and lent a helping hand to those who are suffering! Most of the problems we encounter each day are due to our selfish nature and our pride.
#2. Donate money and time to the local food bank. Food banks are literally starving for volunteers in addition to money and food donations. Especially with the financial crisis our country is in, there are so many needy and hungry people and so few workers and food packages to go around. I would have more time to work at one of the many food banks in our state, and spend time encouraging others to do the same.
#3. Donate time to work for children’s charities. Children are such a precious gift and they will remember those who touched their lives. One of the things we thought would be a good thing is if there were a place kids and teens could go and have safe, drug and gang free fun. Play arcade games, have a burger or pizza, play with animals, etc. at no cost. Just a fun day for kids all run by volunteers! It would also be a place where kids could play games their elders played when they were kids, enjoy the same kind of music, candy, and other activities their grandparents and parents enjoyed. What a learning experience for them…and all for free!
#4. Take care of family. I would make sure mine and my husbands families want for nothing. If there are any hurdles they are finding it difficult to overcome, loss of a job, car accident, hospital bills, etc. I would help them with their needs. I would hope they would do the same for me if I were ever in crisis.
#5. Anonymously help out a stranger in need. There are many people out there that if I were to put myself in their place, I would ask myself this question. What would I want someone to do for me if I lost my job or found myself in desperate need of money? People are to love one another and help each other whenever we can. Remember, you can’t take the money with you and I imagine that our Lord would bless us, so that we can bless each other. We can work at a soup kitchen to feed the homeless, a charity thrift (choose this one wisely with much research or just start your own!), create a foundation for homeless children, disaster stricken people, etc. You will feel the blessings tenfold!
Hopefully I have given you a few ideas of what to do with your blessings and windfall in case one ever comes your way! I know what I will do with mine!
