There are a few quarterbacks every single season that end up performing way above the expectations that have been set for them, and the perfect storm of circumstances usually plays a big part in it. Talent is certainly a part of the equation, but most every NFL quarterback has talent on some level or another. It takes a whole lot more than talent for an NFL quarterback to break out and exceed expectations. It takes the right surroundings, the right supporting cast and the right situation as well. Here are five quarterbacks that are set to have breakout seasons in the NFL this year, and make their mark in the league for the years to come.
Matt Moore – Nobody was overtly shocked when Moore became the starter in Carolina, but many were shocked to see Delhomme get released during the offseason. Many felt that the money Delhomee received was enough reason to at least keep him around to mentor the Panther quarterback, but the Panthers had other plans. Instead, they released Delhomme and drafted Jimmy Clausen and Tony Pike. Now they have a “quarterback competition” in Carolina. Moore is not dumb enough to think that is legitimate, and he knows the job is his to lose. What is more, he is ready to take over the reigns of an offense that has huge potential. As the last several games of last year showed, Moore is capable of huge things when given the shot. He has that shot in 2010 and will be ready to go.
Sam Bradford – Bradford is one of those enigmas in that he is almost certain to take the reigns of an NFL team out of the gate. What makes this interesting is that the Rams have some decent talent around him, if they can keep him protected. That said, he will struggle at times. In spite of this, I see big numbers for Bradford in the near future, and a very satisfied St. Louis fan base to boot.
Kevin Kolb – Kolb has been doing all the right things since he entered the league, and has toiled behind the great McNabb for long enough. The Eagles parted ways with McNabb, and that cleared the way for this youngster to finally step in and get some time. In the games he has played in, he has shown that he has the talent. What really makes Kolb so interesting as a breakout star quarterback this season is his surroundings. Like Moore, he has a ton of targets and a great running game to fall back on. Expect him to be a household name by the end of the year.
Jake Delhomme – Delhomme? Really? Yep. The reason is simple. Delhomme is a very talented quarterback that is getting a second chance at a crucial point in his career. Unlike others before him, Jake will bring some wins to the city of Cleveland. That alone will be enough to earn him a spot on this list. The guy is a winner by and large, and the Browns are not going to be disappointed. Wait and see, sports fans.
Matthew Stafford – Stafford to me is the primary star to emerge at the quarterback position. While some say it will be Mark Sanchez, I think that Stafford has the right situation in front of him for big numbers. Sanchez will win more games with the loaded Jets, but Stafford will be the better quarterback by far. As a matter of fact, Stafford will win more over the long term I think because the Lions are growing a winner over in Detroit the right way.
