There are probably hundreds or thousands of learning resources online for different languages and a lot of them are free. Some of these online learning sites are really comprehensive and you can really learn the language however, there are a lot of websites that are incomplete. The same thing goes for published books. I’ve seen really bad ones where there are only phrases and translations but they lack in the explanation of grammar. The bad thing there is that they claim that it’s a grammar book.
I’ve been studying Korean for the past 2 months and I’ve been studying online since as well as watching Korean TV shows and LSK (Let’s Speak Korean) on Arirang TV. I’ve always wondered if I would need to buy a real grammar book for Korean so I decided to go around and look for a good one.
Too bad though, I tried to look at different branches of National Bookstore which supposedly should have at least a good grammar book but I’ve tried like 6 branches and I wasn’t able to see one. They’re all dictionaries and phrase books. However, 2 days ago, we went to a mall that we haven’t visited for a couple of years. We strolled around the Riverbanks Mall in Marikina City until we saw Merriam Webster Bookstore.
We just randomly thought to go in and to our surprise; the Japanese grammar book my sister was looking for was there. Then, I looked at the bottom shelf of language reference section and finally found a good Korean grammar book. It’s entitled Let’s Speak Korean by John H. Koo and published by Samji Book and Merriam Webster Bookstore Philippines. That’s probably why I wasn’t able to see it in any other bookstore.
A good grammar book should have all (or at least most) of what you need. It’s supposed to teach grammar from sentence formations, verb forms, use of articles, conjunctions, etc. It must be structured meaning that it starts off with the basics like teaching you how to read, write and pronounce then slowly introduce sentence patterns and the rest of the grammar rules.
And yes, Let’s Speak Korean is a very good book and not to undermine the online learning sites, this book is much more comprehensive. The online language learning sites have a great edge though. They are interactive. I have a bad reading habit of getting sleepy after around 10 minutes of reading.
Well, it’s just me. I like reading on the computer but I really want a resource that I can open anytime. In the past 2 days, I’ve been reading the book a lot and I noticed that in a few hours, I am actually reading faster and my vocabulary got a lot better. My progress in learning Korean seems to be faster using this book. Plus, due to the increase in utility fees, specifically electricity, it saves us a considerable amount since I don’t have to keep my computer on just to study.
