EDIT: It has come to my attention that FerretUniverse.com does not promote the ferret breeder Marshall Farms. I erroneously reported that in an earlier version of this article. I wish to express my deepest apologiees to Brenda, the webmaster of FerretUniverse.com.
FerretUniverse.com is a website devoted to ferret health. Although there is some other ferret-related information on it, such as finding ferret rescues and basic ferret care, the emphasis is on ferret health. When ferret owners search online for answers to questions about their ferrets, it’s often to find information for health problems. Vets even go to the web in search of answers because ferret health is often not covered in veterinary schools.
FerretUniverse.com is one of the allowed resource websites for freelance writers working for Demand Studios. Considering that such sites as About.com, HowStuffWorks and Helium are not allowed resources, this is reasonably high praise for the accuracy of FerretUniverse.com’s information.
FerretUniverse.com is very well organized and the links work. The main menu always appears on the upper left hand corner of the screen, so you can easily backtrack or maneuver around the site without having to strain your eyeballs finding the itsy-bitsy menus some other ferret sites have.
The font is large enough to read comfortably, but some readers may have to adjust the font size of their computer browser in order to read easily. FerretUniverse.com uses dark print against a light background, which is easiest on the eyes for reading at long stretches at a time. The articles can get quite lengthy, but you can dip and sample as you choose.
Perhaps the most valuable tool is the find a ferret veterinarian tool. Unfortunately, this only works for Canada and North America, so if you don’t live there, tough luck. However, it is thought that ferrets living in Europe generally are healthier than North American ferrets for reasons as yet unknown.
FerretUniverse.com does mention ferret breeding, but not to promote breeding. Since there are so many ferrets in shelters, some ferret lovers may bristle at the thought of a ferret breeder selling kits that could possibly wind up in shelters. There is a section on Marshall Farms which may at first look as if it is a promotion, but it is not.
Also, the copyright dates are from 2000 – 2008. This writer has not been able to discover if the site is still maintained, although the information on it is currently accurate. There is a message board that is active, which means that FerretUniverse.com overall is alive or kicking. No notices of ferrets for sale are allowed on the message board. There is a chat room on the site, but no one ever seems to enter it.
FerretUniverse.com is heavy on text, light on graphics but highly recommended for anyone researching how to care for pet ferrets or whether to know when a ferret needs a vet. It’s also a helping hand whenever a ferret gets a diagnosis with a frightening name and the distraught ferret owner wants to see what the options are.
