These great faux suede falling leaf magnets are a perfect way to use up excess scrap fabric while creating a festive decoration for your home. Use as a hostess gift or in your own space this fall.
For this project, you will need:
– 1/8 inch thick sheet of crafting wood (available at craft supply shops)
– Jigsaw or other tool used to cut crafting wood
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Pumpkin Orange
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Brown Boots
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gold
– Krylon Spray Adhesive
– Scraps of faux suede
– Fabric marking pen
– Craft knife
– Self-healing mat
– Leaf shaped stencils
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Adhesive backed magnetic tape strips
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Before starting, cover the area in which you will be constructing this project with newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Place the sheet of crafting wood flat on the workspace. Use a ruler and a pencil to transform the sheet into several squares that are two inches by two inches. Create as many squares as you wish to have finished magnets. Carefully cut out each of these squares using a jigsaw or other tool used to cut crafting wood. Sand the edges of each square smooth using a sheet of medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe down each with a tack cloth or other soft cloth before proceeding.
Prime both sides of each square with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let them dry for an hour before painting using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Pumpkin Orange, Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Brown Boots, and/or Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gold. (Use one color per square of wood.) Dry for a half an hour before adding a second coat of paint and drying for an additional four or more hours.
Place the scraps of faux suede on the self healing mat, right side down. In fabric marking pen, trace the leaf shape onto the back of the suede. Carefully cut out the leaf design with a craft knife. Spray the backside of the suede leaf shape with Krylon Spray Adhesive. Attach one leaf to the center of each wooden square. Once dry, remove the paper backing from a strip of magnetic tape. Apply a dab of hot glue to the adhesive side and adhere to the back of each wooden piece. Cool completely before enjoying your new fall creation.
