The world cannot unite to face its challenges. Our real enemies remain mostly off our radar; they are terrorists, poverty, ignorance & bigotry. We are more concerned & overwhelmed by peripheral issues, fighting among ourselves to prove our arguments & score points.
We need to identify our goals & unite behind our leaders; but mostly we get lost in our pursuits & get easily distracted. The real dangers are many that can set us even to Stone Age! Nuclear Weapons falling into the hands of those who might just use them for no rhyme or reason; sorry, to ascend to heaven!
Like in our personal lives, we can focus mostly only when we are faced with a crisis. Otherwise, we just get carried away with attitudes that can descend into sloth. Countries are no different. The moment there is some peace & less outside threat, the focus is lost, taking the easy out with short-term goals than long-term pursuits.
Democratic countries have wheels within wheels, with infighting at every stage, to slow-down or even torpedo the efforts for getting ahead. China, under state control & top-down, no nonsense way of governance, is getting ahead. They are able to face challenges that democracies baulk-at.
Unfortunately, time is running short. Our old ways of working are coming apart at the seams; oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a case in point. There are limits to gorging ourselves on finite resources without a thought to the future needs. Big efforts & investments are needed for sustainable living. We need Research & Development on renewable energy, Health care, infrastructure etc.
Weapons of Mass Destruction are another area that requires close cooperation, trust & understanding among nations. If the bigger powers agree to cooperate on the basics, others will follow. Petty squabbles among them will play into the hands of the real enemies who would feel emboldened.
Not only are there enemies of mankind in our midst that thrive due to lack of cooperation among the countries, natural disasters can happen anytime. They require massive resources & test our ingenuity to face them. The oil spill came out of the blue that is testing the limits, even straining relations among friendly countries.
The lack of focus in pursuing our vital goals & getting side-tracked by issues that are more bureaucratic in nature can cost us dearly in terms of time, resultant costs & lost opportunities. The world has opened-up with everyone in frenzy to catch-up with the rich in consumption levels & owning the best of everything! The strain on finite resources is ruining our environment. It looks like we are fiddling when Rome is burning.
We have to buck-up for real; otherwise, we will leave a much worse world than we inherited & rue the opportunities lost!
