Not relying on money to have a good time is one of the most valuable things you can teach yourself. Yes, I did say teach yourself, because unless you were raised and already know how, it may be a bit of a challenge at first. However, the reward it brings is not limited to simply financial security. Your life on a whole will be much better and stress in all areas will be reduced. Did you know that the number one fight between most couples is due to financial woes? Unfortunately, life requires money. Living is expensive! Family emergencies, sudden health issues, natural disasters and losses are not in our control. So it is very important to have financial security. Believe it or not, you can have this even if you don’t make a lot of money. All you have to do is learn how to enjoy life without spending a lot. Here are some great ways to have a good time and feel fulfilled without breaking the bank.
The cheapest way to view movies is renting them from your local library. Another great option is your grocery store, if they have a $1 rental machine. If you’re a real movie buff, signing up for an online rental program or club through your local rental store is an excellent idea. You can have great date nights this way, or invite a group of your friends/family over for a wonderful time. Have each person bring a snack to keep it cheap and give everyone something to nosh on.
A great way to get groups of people together whether it’s your parents, siblings or friends are game nights. You can play board games or cards and make it really fun by gambling pennies or candy. Another thing you can play is video games that have multi player capability. Have everyone bring a beverage or snack so that everyone contributes a little.
Fashion Swap Parties
These days clothing is pricey, so get a group of your friends together to do clothing and accessory swaps. Get out some pieces you have that are still in good condition and find some new things to change up your wardrobe. Be sure you have an idea of everyone’s sizes ahead of time so that each person will be able to trade something. Keep in mind that you can also do this with movies, music or video games as well.
Planting seeds and plants is fun and rewarding. A flower garden can add beauty to the outside of your house and planting vegetables can save you even more money on groceries. If you go to your local nursery you can get some great suggestions and tips on how and when to plant. Try to find sales and deals. If you’d like to plant trees or larger, more expensive items, check the internet for locals wanting to get rid of theirs because you can get them very cheap or even free sometimes.
Starting a journal is a great idea if you love to write. It is also a great way to develop skills in that area if you need practice, as well as therapeutic. In fact, I can’t think of a better way to vent, write down your dreams and fears. It really helps you find yourself.
Local Shows and Free Events
Look up events in your community’s local paper or on their website. Things like music shows, wine tasting and art shows might be listed. You can also find out if the community college or public schools in your area have theatre productions with inexpensive tickets.
Group Weekend Getaway, On the Cheap
Gather a group of your friends or family together and squeeze everyone into a hotel suite. The more people, the less expensive it will be since you can divide the bill. Another great idea is camping. Usually, you only have to pay for parking and the camping spot. Get several friends or couples together for a fun weekend.
Do you have a talent such as being able to play a musical instrument, cook, design websites or building furniture? You can talk to a friend who has a talent you like and trade lessons.
Even if you don’t have experience with art, painting is fun and relaxing. Art is whatever you want it to be, so get creative! You can start with watercolors or oil. Look online, or ask around for deals on brushes and materials.
Museums and Art Galleries
These are another great place to have a good time without spending much. Check out museums you’d like to go to online- see what the fees are. A lot of museums will charge you for parking or tickets for special events, but many times it’s free.
If there is an event or place you’d like to visit, don’t be afraid to ask if there is a group discount. If it requires a lot of people, you can always ask the people you know to bring friends, etc.
Do you like to read? Join or start a book club! These are great because you and the group will all be reading the same book and discussing it. They can be a lot of fun. You can either find a local group online, or get one together yourself. Try to rent the book from your library or buy it used.
