The Wisconsin Dells area is well known for water parks, large resorts and smaller hotels for people of all ages. One thing that I have gotten into lately is staying at Bed and Breakfasts. They are more intimate for my husband and me, and make for more of a peaceful stay without all of the City’s hustle and bustle at the times we want getaways like that.
Pinehaven Bed and Breakfast was a perfect find in the area of the Dells. It is a located at E 13083 Highway 33 in Baraboo Wisconsin. So it is not directly in the Dells, but is only a short drive away from many of the areas popular tourist spots.
Pinehaven is located only 16 miles outside of all of the Wisconsin Dells attractions in a more secluded country area. As you pull on to the road that takes you to the bed and breakfast, you will pass by rows of pine trees on each side of the road. In the distance you will see green forests, bluffs and farm land instead of large resorts, high traffic volume and everything else you experience staying directly in Wisconsin Dells. It is much more secluded and romantic if that is what you are looking to experience on your vacation getaway.
The hosts of Pinehaven were very friendly and made our stay there very memorable and special. Lyle and Marge Getschman were perfect owners to run a bed and breakfast. They catered to their guests and made everyone feel important. I recommend this place for couples of any age that are looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway. For families you may be better off at staying at a resort so that the kids are entertained. There really isn’t much to do here for children.
The rooms in the bed and breakfast were very quite and homey. The room that we stayed in had a private bath, small refrigerator; queen sized bed, free high-speed internet and air conditioning. The room was decorated in a country theme with landscape pictures hanging on the walls. Large windows in the rooms give you a view of the bluffs and lake that were absolutely breathtaking. I wish I had a view like that at home! I can’t imagine how beautiful the view is when it is fall and all of the trees are different colors. We want to go back during the fall season to check it out.
You can also stay in one of the guest cottages that offer its guests 2 bedrooms, a whirlpool bath, a private kitchen area, wood burning stove and a front porch complete with a 2 person swing. No meals are included when you stay here though since you have a kitchen area to cook for yourself at.
At night you have a few different activities that you can choose from. You can take a peaceful walk around the Baraboo River or the lake that is located on the property or ask your hosts for the use of a row boat to enjoy. You can fish off of the rowboat, but it is just for catching and releasing.
The backyard is so pretty with a gazebo that is surrounded by bird baths and a beautiful flower garden that Marge plants herself. Relaxing back here with a glass of wine was one of the highlights of the night. You can also relax on the upper veranda and lower decks for a view of the area.
Also on the property are beautiful Belgian Draft Horses roaming in the pastures. To go see these at a closer distance, Lyle will take you to the area and give you a tour. You are unable to go explore them on your own. He will let you know the history of the horses, their names and much more! You could see that the horses meant a lot to him; because his face was lit up the whole time he was talking about them. And you knew by this time, he had probably told these stories countless numbers of times to other guests.
In the evening if you are lucky Marge will have one of her homemade pies sitting out for the guests to enjoy. We got the honor of trying her homemade apple pie! It was delicious and the smell of it filled the house all night long.
If you want to watch some TV or a DVD, you could head over to the living room and cuddle up in front of the fireplace. The room next to it had a grand piano, so when guests were playing the piano it was hard to hear the TV. But we were only trying to see what the weather was going to be like for the next few days so it was no big deal. We ended up joining the other guests that were congregating around the piano.
In the morning we awoke to an amazing candlelit breakfast served on fine china! We ate fresh fruit, homemade bread and muffins, and apple French toast. It was so good I just wanted to keep on eating. The best part is that you can look through Marge’s cookbooks to write down a few of her popular recipes to take home with you!
Other attractions in the area that were close was Mirror Lake State Park which was 9 miles away, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin with was 40 miles away, Circus World Museum is 4 miles away and the amazing must see place of House of the Rock at 45 miles away. If you have never been to House of the Rock, you must check that place out. I try to go a few times a year because it is always changes as the seasons change. Being only 45 miles away from the place, it is worth making the drive there from here.
I would highly recommend this place for couples looking for peace and quiet, seclusion from the city life, and romance. You will not be disappointed and the price is very reasonable and endless action is a close drive no matter what you are looking for to do.
