First off, tell me a little bit about yourself.
I am a native Floridian who lives for creating. As any true artist I dabble in everything. I would say that my favorite creative form is jewelry. Colored Stones and ancient coins are some of favorite materials to work with. I am currently working as a goldsmith catering to a very specific clientele in a fairly affluent community. I am married to the most handsome man in the world ( I’m not kidding! ) I have 1 ridiculously gorgeous son and 2 lovely dogs.I love traveling… anywhere! I love gardening and I am always being stimulated by the beauty of nature. One of my favorite things to do is take long walks on the beach, picking up interesting little tidbits along the journey in between swimming. Vixen Design Studio is the cache of treasure that I herd together from all of my creations for all to see and own!
How and when did you start making jewelry and your other items?
I was about 12 when I started making jewelry and I just never stopped. As far as other things I’ve made, I remember being just old enough to be able to go outside without supervision and wandering in the woods surrounding my house. I would follow rabbits, squirrels, birds, foxes and the like to see where they went and I would find seeds and rocks, etcetera and create little sculptures out there among the pine trees and cabbage palms with the animals as my audience. I have always had the innate need to create. It has just always been there. That’s how Vixen Design Studio came about. It just happened very organically.
When and how did you originally find Etsy?
I found Etsy through my mother who loves jewelry and vintage items (clearly a family trait!) and had purchased some items on the site, then suggested it to me.
What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?
Even though I joined Etsy last year in October, I didn’t officially start selling through Vixen Design Studio until about January of this year. I have everything from designer scarves and belts to sterling platters and designer vintage jewelry pieces in my vintage section, and a great variety of handmade jewelry and other items in my handmade section. I did alot of research and really made an effort to do it properly from the start. So, I didn’t rush. There is just so much to learn! Etsy has some fabulous attributes, the most important to me being the fact that it really has a genuine sense of appreciation for exceptional quality as well as diversely unique product. The Etsy world really has a deep understanding of the fact that things made by hand or fabulous vintage pieces are truly special. They have a distinct palette that refuses anything too mainstream or “normal” and I love that!
What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?
Sometimes, I’ll be waking up in the morning or going to sleep at night and there it is… this idea that just… came to me. Other times, I will see something and then think hmm… what if I put this with it… then what? I am in love with color. Pairing color in the ideology of opposite color wheel palette is something that I really like.
I love experimenting and combining them in ways that are unexpected. I think its one of the most stimulating aspects of this world. I also really love colored gemstones and ancient coins. The history behind them really appeals to my curiosity. I start thinking things like ” I wonder what they bought with this?”. Also, needless to say, the ocean is incredibly inspiring to me. It has always felt right to me for it to just be there, and creating jewelry that reminds us of the ocean just brings up fond memories for myself and many others.
What is your favorite piece you’ve created and why?
My wedding rings. Enough said. (see most handsome man comment above)
I do however have some that take close second. They are multi-hued tourmaline chandelier earrings. The colors are just so rich and scrumptious!
What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?
Exposure. The internet has so much to offer, but as mentioned earlier I love Etsy for the fact that the customers who shop on Etsy are artisan admirers. They are people who still appreciate special things that are made with human hands, intellect and skill. I want other people to able to experience some of the beauty this world has to offer through discovering Vixen Design Studio and ultimately, I would love to gain the independence required to do this as a career.
Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?
I have many things in the works, some of which I am anticipating not wanting to sell because I’m pretty sure that I am going to want to hoard them all for myself! ( Don’t forget, I love jewelry to wear ,too! ) I have just returned from a buying trip where I found some awesome coins, really fabulous gemstone beads and I have also been creating some pretty cool one of a kind clasps. I will also be expanding my vintage collections as well as my popular line of shell and gemstone jewelry.
