First off, tell me a little bit about yourself.
I’m the creator behind Nostalgic Creations by Heidi.
I live in southern NJ with my significant other and have two adult children who have made me a grandma several times over. My family emigrated to the US after WW2 and became naturalized citizens. I speak three languages (sort of) English, German and French. My daughter is still reproaching me for not teaching her German, but at the time she did not want to learn it, and I was never good at forcing someone.
How and when did you start making jewelry and your other items?
I have always enjoyed creating things. Jewelry design and repair was just a natural outcome of many years of accumulation, inheritances and people just bringing their stuff for repair and then forgetting to pick it up. That is why I have the iron-clad rule that I will not sell to relatives and old friends, if they really like something, I will give it to them.
When and how did you originally find Etsy?
My son found Etsy and opened the shop for me. According to him, everyone loves my creations (sons have a tendence to dote on their Moms, daughters, on the other hand, are quick to point out where Mom messed up). To make a long story short, they both told me to stop giving the stuff away, and while they were at it, gave me mandates on pricing.
What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?
I found Etsy extremely easy to set up and maintain. They walk you through the steps in easy to understand instructions. If I can do this, anybody can.
What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?
What inspires me the most is seeing someone happy wearing one of my creations. Several month ago I received a post card from Hawaii. She was wearing one of my necklaces while standing in front of the volcano. I just found that to be exhilarating.
What is your favorite piece you’ve created and why?
I really do not have a “favorite” piece. I love all of my creations. Right now I am in the process of discovering copper and how to wire wrap. I find the combination of copper and silver to be very interesting. I am not very partial to gold, but I have a great many chains and bracelets in that metal, consequently I have begun to tackle that stash.
What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?
What I hope to accomplish with my shop is to bring joy and happiness.
Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?
I always have new creations in the works. If you check out my shop, you will find that new items are constantly posted. I will admit to having a penchant for ancient designs. In my youth, I had work assignment in Lebanon 2 to 3 times a year. During my stays, I visited Baalbek and many other historical sites, but most importantly, I discovered and fell in love with the ancient Etruscans. I love the earth tone colors. They, like the ancient Egyptians, loved Carnelian (one of my favorite stones) and Jasper, also a great earth tone stone. I also love their combination of various metals. I just finished a necklace of silver and copper with jasper beads.
