First off, tell a little bit about yourself.
My name is Gloria Kaufman and I am the owner of Gloria Lynn Glass. I live in a suburb outside Chicago Illinois with my husband, and a cat named Menace. I have 3 grown sons. I’ve done everything from being a stay at home Mom to an owner of a Stained Glass Store.
How and when did you start making jewelry and your other items?
I took a stained glass class in 1990 at Prairie State University. I knew right away it was a special class because there were so few spaces available. So many people repeated the class that there were only 2 or 3 spaces available. We were taught all the ways one could use stained glass to create art pieces, and even touched on glass fusing. I knew right away I had a passion for stained and fused glass. I spent several years creating stained glass pieces for my family and friends. After a number of years creating lead and copper foil pieces I felt I wanted to experiment more with fused glass. So about 12 years ago I purchased a kiln and the fun began. I made fused glass clocks, plates, jewelry boxes, sun catchers and candle holders. In 2001 a friend of mine was teaching a fused glass cabochon and wire wrapping class. I really wanted to learn the technique of wire wrapping so I took her class. I made my first cabochon and wire wrapped it and I was hooked on fused glass jewelry.
I’m drawn to fused glass jewelry because it allows the artist so much opportunity to be creative, and the finished piece has so much depth you can get lost in it. It is a very captivating art form.
When and how did you originally find Etsy?
I started out selling my jewelry on Yessy.com in 2006. I sold some of my pendants there, but I wasn’t really satisfied with Yessy. I heard about Etsy from a friend of mine. I looked at a number of different venues and finally decided to give Etsy a try in June 2007.
What is unique about Etsy and what is it about the website and your shop that you like most?
I love the sense of community Etsy has. It’s like one big family. I also like how much control you have in setting up your shop and that each shop can reflect your individuality. I have more control over my destiny then I had on Yessy. I have found that the Etsy community has shown me love and helpful guidance when ever I needed it.
What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?
My first source of inspiration is the glass itself. I’m on a quest to bring out all the mystical qualities I feel are there. My second source of inspiration are other glass jewelry artists who’s creative pieces inspire me to be more imaginative and creative myself. Another source of inspiration is nature itself. I feel I’m taking little pieces of the sky, the earth, the fire and water and I creating little worlds of colors and energy.
What is your favorite piece you’ve created and why?
It was too hard to pick just one. I have two favorite pieces, one is my dichroic heart pendant and the other one is my wire wrapped pendant.
I think my favorite pieces are the ones with dichroic glass. Dichroic glass has a mystical quality to it. The colors of dichroic glass are breathtaking and can shift in color when viewed from different angles. I am on a quest to unlock the brilliance that can be achieved by using this material. This brilliance can appear as if the piece itself has light illuminating from within. The brilliance is so stunning it is as if the color is a glowing neon color and very magical looking and draws a person to gaze into its depth. It’s almost as if in each piece you are creating your own little world to get lost in. I feel I have achieved so much in these years, but there is much more left to achieve.
What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?
I’d like to stride for the most outstanding one of a kind jewelry on Etsy and to continue to have great customer service. It’s always so satisfying to have a customer buy one of my pendant or earrings and be so thrilled with it.
Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?
Lately, I’ve started on a new line of art glass pendants and earrings, which my customers will be seeing more of. It is made by an advance glass fusing technique, which I’ve been experimenting with. I love the results and I’m sure you will too. I’m always trying to “push the envelope” and create new techniques.
