First of all, tell me a little bit about yourself.
My name is Dawn Rozakis and I am 30 years old. I am also the creator of Ghost Love Jewelry. I live with my fiance and two cats in the beautiful town of Montclair, NJ which is a suburb of New York City. Montclair is a cultural mecca with lots of outdoor cafes, restaurants, art galleries, and boutique shops. We love it, but we plan on moving to Montreal, Canada within the next 2 years or so after we get married. It’s a very exciting time!
When did you start making jewelry?
I started making jewelry when I was about 8 years old way back in summer camp and continued to be artistic and creative throughout my teens and early twenties. I attended art school briefly, but switched my major to music recording in order to pursue a career in recording engineering. I decided to start my own business after several years of being in retail after college and just hating it. Ghostlove officially became a corporation in April, 2008 and our web site, www.ghostlove.com, is launching very soon!
When and how did you originally find etsy?
I found etsy in 2007 and absolutely loved buying unique handmade gifts for my friends and family around the holidays. I opened my first jewelry shop, The Steampunk Sweet Shoppe, in January, 2009 as an experiment and it did so well that I decided to launch my full jewelry line on etsy, called Ghostlovejewelry, in May, 2009.
4What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?
I like the set-up and layout of my etsy shop, although I have to say I definitely prefer my own web site’s design because I have more control over what happens in terms of my google rank and advertising. But etsy definitely provides wonderful exposure to bloggers and online communities all over the world. I get contacted quite often to be a part of various events and interviews like this one. It’s definitely a great place to have a shop if you are just getting started.
What inspires you the most in regard to your creations?
I am constantly getting inspired by couture noir / gothic lolita fashion, film, art, and music. I have always been creative and I love to make unique, one of a kind pieces, especially within my Steampunk collection. Steampunk is very popular right now and it is so exciting to see all the fashion coming out inspired by the movement.
What is your favorite piece you’ve created and why?
I don’t really have a favorite piece, but my favorite collection is “La Dolly Vita” which incorporates antique frozen charlotte dolls, as well as various German Bisque antique doll parts. They are elegant, yet creepy and so much fun to make becasue each doll has its own unique personality.
What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?
I would love to keep my etsy shop going to boost my exposure online and drive traffic to my own web site. I am hoping people will like the small sampling of what they see in the shop and go to my web site, where they can get the full Ghostlove experience.
Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?
I am going to be making a collection composed entirely of one-of-a-kind items, each with their own unique “story”, which is something that I have never done before. I think it will be more challenging, as I am used to re-making my pieces again and again based on customer demand. Making truly one of a kind items forces you to be more creative and really think about the design elements. It also keeps you from getting bored and gives you an edge.
