First off, tell me a little bit about yourself.
I am Carol Covert, creator of Carol’s Jewelry Designs. I have always had an interest in art. In the first-grade, I won an “honorable dimension” in our school district for one of my drawings. I love to draw, but I have many other creative interests too. I always tell everyone that I need a studio with fifteen stations for all my creative endeavors. Of course, I have a full time job, which pays the bills and leaves little time to pursue my creative endeavors. However, pursuing my creativity helps balance and fulfills me, so that I can maintain a loving marriage and a happy life.
How and when did you start making jewelry and your other items?
I was originally interested in the polymer clay, and I started making beads from the clay, which eventually progressed into using other materials to make jewelry. I started making jewelry for myself, but you know you can’t stop buying materials and creating new pieces, and before you know it – you have a NEW BUSINESS.
When and how did you originally find Etsy?
I had my own website, but it was very difficult and expensive to advertise the website. I needed another outlet to sell my jewelry. I work, so doing shows, farmer markets and swap meets are not really an option for me. My sister was at an art show, and she discussed my problem with another artisan and she told my sister about Etsy. I immediately signed up!
What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?
Etsy gives all artisans an opportunity to turn their creativity into a business of their choice. It enables each business to reach a wide spectrum of customers that they won’t have the opportunity to sell to normally. It also helps them develop a better business acumen, which helps them operate their business more professionally.
Personally, I am not very good about marketing, so I love to read the various forums and get new ideas on how to market my products. It is really a great NETWORK!
What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?
I love accessories! When I am creating, I try to visualize what I would wear with the piece of jewelry and what type of event I would attend. It helps me determine the overall look of the piece. In addition, I like all kinds of styles, so the door is open to what I want to create!
What is your favorite piece you’ve created and why?
One of my favorite pieces was a double-strand necklace with ivory bone, black horn, and copper. However, it was very sophisticated, as well as ethnic. I could picture someone wearing it at an afternoon or early evening event; wearing an ivory flowing tunic plant suit or dress – it was very beautiful.
What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?
I would like to continue developing my designs, learning and stretching my techniques such as learning the silversmith craft. I would love to be very successful, but it really is more about creating than anything else for me.
Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?
Right now, I am working on a series of sparkly evening or dressier necklace sets. I really love fabulous jewelry for special functions – it is fun to fantasize! I am also going to work on some ethnic pieces, which really are my favorites. I like the exotic! Well, I really like everything!
Where can readers find out about more information regarding your jewelry and other creations and possible special offers (including additional websites, blogs, facebook, etc)?
First, you can access me on the Etsy website at Carol’s Jewelry Designs. I have a blog (sorry to say it is not up to date) and I am listed on Facebook.
