First off, tell me a little bit about yourself.
I’m the creator of Bead Stylin’.I am Jeannie, and I am a native Kansan, still residing in this windswept, beautiful state with my husband and four children. We are a homeschooling family as well. We share our home with two adorable black kitties, one of which is a polydactyl (he has nine–yes, nine!–toes on each of his front paws).
We live in a rambling, never quite clean, two-story house in suburbia but dream of wooded acreage in the country. Maybe a place with a giant wrap-around porch and a fishing lake. And, of course, a separate studio for my work!
I like to haunt thrift shops, antique malls, and dusty old bookstores. I brake for garage sales. I work a mean crossword puzzle, stay up way too late, and drink vast amounts of coffee. A bit of a homebody I am, but I still enjoy a good dark beer and a night out from time to time with my hubby. When I’m not working on my Etsy shop, I like to metal detect, camp, and read. And I’m terribly frugal.
I shun crowds, big slobbery dogs, and clowns. I am also a fan of proper punctuation.
How and when did you start making jewelry and your other items?
I started about 13 years ago making rosaries. From there, it just seemed to naturally branch out into jewelry. I am completely self taught and have come to realize that there is always something new to learn and perfect.
When and how did you originally find Etsy?
It was one of those word-of-mouth things. A few years ago a local customer told me that I should check it out. And I’m very glad I did!
What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?
To me, Etsy is unique in that it has a very strong sense of community. I especially enjoy the forums. Many times, if I have a question, I can just type in the topic and look up past postings and get my answer that way. I also like the whole “hearting” concept. It’s a great way to get promoted, and I’ve discovered many awesome shops by browsing other people’s favorites.
What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?
So many different things inspire me. Having a fairly strong art background has aided me in putting together colors and designs. I’m also inspired by new beads. Sometimes I won’t put them away right away. I like to leave them sitting out so that I can look at them and come up with ideas.
What is your favorite piece you’ve created and why?
I have lots of favorites, so this is a hard question to answer. Right now, I’m really loving my Bel Fiore earrings and my Tree of Life pendant.
What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?
I want to continue to grow my business. I am finally at the point of having lots of return customers, and I want to continue to keep them happy as well as bring in new buyers as well. Jewelry is a very competitive market on Etsy, so establishing a niche is important.
Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?
I always have something new cooking. Right now, I am working to improve my metalsmithing skills. I also purchased a new lampwork torch and hope to someday get that set up and going. With a family, homeschooling, and a large house, there are only so many hours in the day. As my Etsy banner says, “So many beads, so little time.” I find this to be so true!
Where can readers find additional info and special offers? (blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc).
I do need to work on the promotional side of my business more. Right now though, I do have a blog.
