Introduction: Imagine if you lived in a log cabin out in the country. In the bottom corner of your back yard, there is a fountain. One day, as you visit the fountain, you hear a voice. This is the beginning of a great adventure between eight-year-old Ellen and the owner of that unique voice.
It was Spring Break for eight-year-old Ellen. One late morning, she walked to the bottom of her yard to sit by the side of the fountain. She loved the look and sound of flowing water. Today, she was amazed to hear a very unexpected sound. Ellen heard a voice.
The voice said, “Welcome, Ellen!”
Ellen started and looked around. “What? Who said that?”
She didn’t see anybody standing anywhere nearby. In fact, there were no people standing in their yards. She couldn’t even see anybody staring out their windows. So who could have spoken?
Ellen said, “Is somebody there? If so, please let me know where you are so I can both see you and talk to you.”
She waited. Nothing happened.
Ellen said out loud, “I guess I must have been imagining things.”
That voice said, “No, you were not imagining things; however, you do have a very good imagination. I was simply trying to decide how I was going to honor your request.”
Again Ellen looked around and didn’t see anybody. She said, “I don’t understand what you mean.”
The voice said, “Well, you can obviously hear me; however, you can’t see me. If I find a way to allow you to see me, I don’t know if you will be able to hear me. So what is your wish? Are you content to simply hear me, or do you find it necessary to see me in order to continue talking to me?”
Ellen said, “Uh, …, can you give me a moment to think about it?”
The voice said, “Sure! Let me know what you decide.”
Ellen thought for a while. Finally, she said, “Uh, I’m ready to give you my answer. Are you still there?”
The voice said, “Yes, I’m still here.”
Ellen said, “I think as long as I can talk to you, I am okay that I can’t see you. Could you at least tell me about yourself?”
The voice said, “Now I must be allowed to think for a moment. Do you mind waiting?”
Ellen said, “I can wait, as long as my mother does not decide it is time for me to come back inside. If she calls, then I have to go.”
The voice said, “Fair enough! I won’t be long.”
Ellen sat there. She untied and re-tied her left shoe. She sat there. She untied and re-tied her right shoe. She sat there. She sighed. She was just about to give up when she heard that voice again.
The voice said, “I’m back, Ellen. I realize it must have felt like I was gone for a long time. I had to find out from my boss how much I am allowed to reveal.”
Ellen said, “Oh! That makes sense. So how much can you tell me about yourself?”
The voice said, “First, in case you can’t tell by hearing my voice, I am female. I am young. Not as young as you; however, I am considered to be a young one. My name is Tania.”
Ellen said, “Hello, Tania. It is very nice to meet you.”
Tania said, “It’s very nice to meet you. Would you like to know a bit more?”
Ellen said, “You betcha! I sure would!”
Tania laughed. “You live in that house at the top of the hill. The entrance to my house is near this fountain.”
Ellen said, “It is? Wow! Uh, would I ever be able to go to your house?”
Tania said, “Maybe someday.”
Ellen said, “Uh, …, Tania? I don’t mean to be rude. I hope this doesn’t sound rude, because I don’t mean it to be. But, I was wondering … ?”
Tania, “What were you wondering?”
Ellen said, “Well, uh, …, are you a … fairy?”
Tania said, “I’m not sure I’m allowed to answer that. I will have to check.”
Suddenly, Ellen heard her mother calling her. “Ellen! Come up to the house now. Your lunch is ready.”
Ellen looked back toward the house and called out, “Yes, Mama! I’ll be right there!”
Ellen looked back and said, “Tania, are you still there?”
Tania said, “Yes, I’m still here.”
Ellen said, “It looks like I have to go. Will I be able to talk to you again soon?”
Tania said, “Yes, I’ll watch for you to visit the fountain sometime soon. Perhaps I’ll be able to tell you more next time we meet.”
Ellen said, “Okay. I hope so! See you later!”
Ellen got up, looked back longingly at the fountain, and then headed up the hill to her house. She eagerly anticipated meeting up with Tania sometime really soon.
