Elizabeth Banks may star in ‘Tink’, a live action movie based on Tinkerbell, according to EmpireOnline.com. The movie will follow other successful Disney franchises like the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies (based on the Disney theme park ride); ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ (based on a video game); and the upcoming movie Disney hopes will be a box-office success and the film that’s closest to ‘Tink’ in spirit, ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ (loosely based on the Disney animated short from ‘Fantasia’). But what is ‘Tink’ going to be about, and is Elizabeth Banks the right choice for Tinkerbell in the live action movie?
Will Elizabeth Banks become yet another version of Tinkerbell?
The first time we met Tinkerbell, she was a voiceless fairy friend to Peter Pan, a pixie whose magic dust could help children fly. She then became a Disney mascot, appearing to use a magic wand (which she didn’t have in ‘Peter Pan’) to sprinkle fairy dust in the opening credits of Disney programs. Julie Roberts played a much different version of Tinkerbell in the live action Disney movie ‘Hook’, about an older Peter Pan’s return to Never Land. Here she can talk; wears a dirty, grubby, brown dress; and sports a short, brown pixie haircut. And in the popular CGI straight-to-DVD movies, Tinkerbell is given a voice and fairy friends from Pixie Hollow to have adventures with.
Elizabeth Banks has the right look to play Tinkerbell, although I think she might be a bit too sexy for role (Tink seems more cutesy and mischievous). And before guys get too excited about Elizabeth Banks running around in Tinkerbell’s super-short green dress in ‘Tink’, keep in mind that there hasn’t been word that she’s actually cast as the fairy; she could be playing another character.
So what could the ‘Tink’ movie be about?
It seems like the ‘Tink’ movie is going to be a romantic comedy in the same vein as Disney’s live action princess flick ‘Enchanted’. It could be about Tinkerbell helping a girl find love in the real world (that girl being Elizabeth Banks), or it could be about Tink herself (played by Elizabeth Banks) shrinking a man down a la Fern Gully or going full size a la Julia Roberts in ‘Hook’ to hook a man. Regardless, I’m kind of enchanted with the idea of Tink getting romantic, and if Elizabeth Banks isn’t playing the fairy, I pray that Kristen Chenoweth or Alice Eve (or maybe even Michelle Williams) is.
Whatever the movie is about, Disney does have one great marketing opportunity: have Tink make an appearance in the next ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie to pester the pirates. I mean, the next movie has already added mermaids ( another part of Peter Pan’s Never Land, along with the pirates), so why not let the fairy have a tiny cameo?
Even without that Tinkerbell tease, I can’t help but look forward to ‘Tink’, so here’s to hoping Disney enchants us again, turning one of its tiniest supporting characters into a huge success.
