El DeBarge rocked the crowd at the 2010 BET Awards with some of his classic 80’s jams, singing hits “All This Love,” “Time Will Reveal” and the popular “Rhythm of the Night” to a crowd that was more than impressed. El DeBarge wasn’t the only comeback kid at the 2010 Bet Awards; Chris Brown performed an emotional Michael Jackson tribute and probably won back a few fans (there’s just no one who can do MJ like Chris Brown can), and Kanye West opened the show. But what was up with Anthony Anderson making a joke about El DeBarge “bringing light skinned and wavy brothers back”?
Another Trend at the 2010 BET Awards: The Fountain of Youth
Perhaps Anthony Anderson was just jealous because the 49-year-old looked like he stepped straight out of the 80’s, not appearing to have aged a day since then. And neither has his fine falsetto voice (why wasn’t he part of the Prince tribute? He could have easily sung “Kiss”). Anti-aging seemed to be in at the 2010 BET Awards, as Trey Songz mom (whom he brought on stage with him) looked young enough to be his girlfriend or sister. And of course Prince has discovered the Fountain of Youth; the 52-year-old could pass for half his age. So maybe Anthony Anderson was just upset that he doesn’t know their incredible secret to staying looking so good (plus I don’t think he could rock the light skinned and wavy look, while El DeBarge definitely pulled it off).
El DeBarge: The Michael Jackson Connection
It’s fitting that El DeBarge attempted to make a comeback during a show with a Michael Jackson tribute, considering that he and his family were once being groomed to become the Jackson 5 for a new generation. When standout star El DeBarge tried to pull a Michael Jackson by breaking out on his own from his family group, he scored a hit with “Who’s Johnny”, a single featured in the film ‘Short Circuit’. But by the early 90’s his star was fading, and he had a bit of trouble with the law in 2008 (he was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, and he was also charged in 2007 with vandalism, domestic abuse, and drug possession). But El DeBarge seems to have his life back on track and looks primed for a comeback with an album set to be released this September.
If the audience at the 2010 BET Awards is any gage of his future success, it looks like El DeBarge will be one of the few stars to manage to make a big comeback after more than a decade.
