Eclipse reviews are high by Twilight standards. The Eclipse reviews are certainly higher than New Moon, and the scores even approach the original Twilight. Still, given the low marks for the Twilight franchise, that may not be much to brag about. Naturally, critics know that nothing they can say will stop the Twi-hards, but they are gnashing their teeth about it less than usual. Yet, this may make the Eclipse reviews more disappointing, as the series had a chance to be fresh and came up just short.
The expectations for this third installment were high, as even critics had hopes for it. This chapter in the series is the most action-packed, and brings the Team Edward vs Team Jacob debate to a final climax. When even Variety and the Hollywood Reporter gave the film good write-ups, it was certain that Eclipse reviews would at least be better than New Moon.
Despite that, the film is still hovering around 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, it is at 49 percent, with a consensus that it is “Stuffed with characters and overly reliant on uninspired dialogue, Eclipse won’t win The Twilight Saga many new converts, despite an improved blend of romance and action fantasy.”
These Eclipse reviews are on-par with the original Twilight, and are far ahead of the critically reviled New Moon. At the least, critics aren’t going overboard with Twilight bashing, although there’s still enough of it to go around. There are still the usual complaints about the story, the Disney-fied romance, and even more Bella-bashing than usual.
But the positive Eclipse reviews do praise the film for being more intense, in action and in the love triangle. They even say it has a sense of humor at times, in between the usual Edward and Bella brooding. Eclipse is being hyped as the best Twilight film, and that seems to be the case – although critics still say it isn’t a big accomplishment.
However, those critics only have one more Twilight story to sit through, albeit in two parts. Eclipse review scores are respectable, but the novel was the last one most Twilight fans liked. Breaking Dawn was a controversial finale that even split Twi-hards, so critics who couldn’t tear into Eclipse might make up for it next time.
The Breaking Dawn countdown is still a ways off, as today is all about part three of Twilight. While Eclipse reviews continue to be mixed, the box office is another matter. Given the fanatical fanbase, and how the movie is opening in a record 4,400+ theaters, it is safe to say that Toy Story 3’s reign is over.
Rotten Tomatoes- “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”
Hollywood Reporter- “Eclipse already breaks release record”
