Eclipse box office opened with a bang on opening day. However, Eclipse box office has gone down a little bit, since it can’t be worth $68.5 million every day. In fact, the three-day weekend totals were barely higher than its opening day gross on Wednesday. Although the overall five-day weekend gross is high, it will not surpass any records, or even blow out the last Twilight movie. Still, the Eclipse box office is leading a big Fourth of July charge for movies, even as critics moan that summer is worse than ever.
After the record-setting opening day, the third Twilight movie dropped off a bit by its high standards. It is estimated to have made $161.2 million in the first five days, with another $20 million projected for today. If the Eclipse box office finishes at $180+ million for six days, it will surpass the six-day Fourth of July weekend record set by Spider Man 2.
Since these movies are made for a relatively low budget, Summit Entertainment has once again turned a quick profit, and then some. The film beat out the more expensive Last Airbender and the more acclaimed Toy Story 3 by a fairly wide margin.
However, the Eclipse box office might not go that much higher after its big weekend. Once New Moon opened huge with over $140 million, it made barely more than that for the rest of its run, ending at $290+ million. For this latest sequel, it might meet the same fate, though it might still get to $300 million overall with some luck.
It will be a neck-and-neck race for Eclipse box office to surpass New Moon as the biggest in the franchise. However, it will likely not overtake Iron Man 2 and Toy Story 3 in the long-run for biggest summer film.
Aside from the big Eclipse box office, Hollywood is celebrating a big Fourth of July. After all the teeth-gnashing over low box office to start the season, things are going up – even if critics say the films are getting worse. The Last Airbender reviews were the worst of the summer, yet its likely $70+ million opening could salvage hopes for a franchise.
As for previous champion Toy Story 3, it dropped off to third, but is estimated to get over $300 million after today. By week’s end, it should overtake Iron Man 2 as the most profitable film of the summer, and is nearing Alice in Wonderland as the top film of the year.
However, the story for this Fourth of July weekend is the Eclipse box office, and how vampires have managed to scorch up the summer. They will try to hold off the villains of Despicable Me next weekend, before Inception’s dream thieves knock them off in two weeks.
