Ease into a retro-modern bedroom with these decorating ideas for your bedroom. Pick your own modern-retro color scheme, learn to embrace geometry and how to make your furniture fit into the modern-retro bedroom.
Color me Retro-Modern
Let ultra white walls be your entry point into a retro-modern bedroom decor scheme. Accent colors could include a jade green, turquoise, umber brown and silver. A warmer retro-modern color scheme is based on a warm red, pumpkin orange, gray, charcoal black and white.
It may not have been your favorite subject in school, but any geometric pattern is your friend in the Retro bedroom. Choose unevenly patterned squares or circles for your linens, curtains or throw rugs. However, do not use geometric shapes everywhere. Choose a focal point in the room and add your geometric shapes there.
Hip to Be Square
You can also easily create the illusion of the uneven geometric pattern by adding unframed squares of mirror in a pattern on one wall, vertically or horizontally. Invite the eyes to dance across the space when you pattern the squares in a diagonal direction.
Going in Circles
Create the same geometric illusion by spacing a half dozen round mirrors in a random pattern on on wall, or on two facing walls. You could also incorporate vinyl records into the decor.
Take Furniture Back in Time
Repaint the sides and top of your dressers with white paint. Leave the front of your furniture a natural wood color. You can also achieve a natural wood grain by carefully applying wood grain contact paper to the front of the drawers. Attach round pull handles to the new, yet Retro drawers.
Also consider adding silver legs to the bottom corners of the bureau. You could attach sofa legs, which are made to hold a substantial amount of weight. Sofa legs come in all different shapes, heights and with different attachments. Find a shape you like and paint the sofa legs to match your retro bedroom colors.
Retro Meets Modern
Add one or two new pieces of furniture or accessories, designed in a retro-modern style, to eliminate the Austin Power effect. Using retro-modern style shows you appreciate the retro look with a modern twist, and you’re not stuck in the past or waxing nostalgic for a decade that passed you by. A retro-modern chair, like the Bop Chair is round, space-like and swivels completely around.
Use odd items intended for other rooms in your retro-modern bedroom. A Ceres Planter in turquoise is most at home outdoors or on a patio, but it can also help your favorite large plant sleep well in your Retro-modern bedroom.
Easy Platform Bed
You don’t have to be a master carpenter to make a platform bed. You could try to make one yourself, or you can buy a platform bed. The easiest way to mimic a platform bed is to lower your bed frame to the lowest setting and remove any foot board or head board. Let the mattress and box spring appear to be floating in platform style. Now you can rest easy in your retro-modern bedroom.
