I love to bake and decorate cakes. Once upon a time, I even made a few wedding cakes. These days; however, I’m strictly a birthday and special occassion kind of baker.
Like everything I do in cooking, I prefer making everything from scratch whenever I have the time. To do it any other way seems like cheating for me because I know that I can do it the proper way.
However, like any busy mom and grandmother, I rarely have the time that I want to do the job from the very beginning. Therefore, I look for good substitutes to use whenever necessary.
I’m a huge fan of Betty Crocker and Pillsbury products across the board. However, when it comes to frosting, I find that I often gravitate toward Duncan Hines. For some reason that I can’t quite put my finger on, their frostings have a more authentic taste, texture and feel.
One of my favorite pre-made frostings is Duncan Hines Creamy Home-Style Buttercream. The name says it all. It is indeed a creamy buttercream frosting that tastes just like something mother would make at home. In other words, it is an acceptable substitute when there just isn’t time to start from scratch.
It is labeled as a “premium frosting” and I have to agree. I think it could stand up well against many of those buttercream alternatives found in bakeries today. It is just that good.
This frosting spreads like a dream without tearing up the cake as you apply it. However, it works just as well if you want to pipe it on in a fancy designing.
It can be colored to match just about any shade. However, its natural color is the perfect ivory white of natural buttercream.
Ingredients include: acetic acid, citric acid, cornstarch, corn syrup, cottonseed oil, mono and digycerides, natural and artificial flavors, polysorbate 60, potassium sorbate, pypophosphate, red 40 (dye), shortening, soybean oil, salt, sodium acid, sodium citrate, sugar, titanium dioxide, vegetable oil, water and yellow 5 (dye).
The frosting should be stored at room temperature until ready for use. If all of the frosting is not used, it should be covered with the original top and stored inside the fridge until ready for reuse. Take it out and allow it to warm to room temperature before using it again.
There are 13, 2 Tbsp. servings of frosting in each 10-oz can. Each serving equals 140 calories. About one-third of that ‘” 50 ‘” is fat-related.
There are 6 grams of fat in each serving of Duncan Hines Creamy Home-Style Buttercream Frosting. Approximately 1.5 grams of that comes from saturated fat and another 1.5 grams from trans fat.
There are also 23 grams of carbohydrates and 22 grams of sugar in each serving. That high content will very likely mean that people watching their carb or sugar intake will need to steer clear of this frosting option.
This frosting contains no cholesterol but does have 70 micrograms of salt. Those watching their salt intake may prefer not to ingest this product.
The frosting contains no other nutritional value in the form of protein, fiber, vitamins or nutrients. It is more or less throwaway calories that anyone being weight conscious might wish to avoid.
Duncan Hines offers a satisfaction guarantee on all of its baking products. Customers who are not satisfied with taste or freshness, may contact 1-800-362-9834 to lodge a complaint. The product will likely be replaced or refunded.
Here is my summary review:
Taste: 5 stars. The taste is unusual and rich. There is a hint of spice with just the right amount of sweetness thrown in.
Appearance: 5 stars: Whatever you cook with McCormick Grilling Mates Applewood Rub will look just as delicious as it tastes. Take a picture. It will look just that good.
Nutrition: 3 stars. The salt content is a bit high and 3 grams of carbohydrate may give some people pause. The fact that it isn’t counterbalanced with nutrients and vitamins is also disappointing.
Ease: 5 stars. This rub is easy to use. Best of all, if you want some new recipes for it, all you have to do is visit the McCormick website. They have tons of suggestions for using their product and I haven’t found a bad one as of yet.
Green rating: 5 stars. The jar is recyclable.
Packaging: 5 stars. McCormick Grilling Mates Applewood Rub comes in a clear jar with a black top and red and white trim. The McCormick and Grill Mates logos are pictured along with a photo of rubbed meat. The packaging looks professional and is eye catching, making it easy to locate on the supermarket shelf.
Ease of storage: 5 stars. The jar is small at just about 2 ½” in height and diameter. It should easily fit into any cabinet, pantry, or kitchen drawer.
Availability: 5 stars. McCormick products can be found at most local grocery marts. It is, after all, the leading brand of spices, marinades and rubs available today. However, if for some reason you cannot locate his rub through that method, it is also available online.
Price: 4 stars. The cost is reasonable at about $3. This rub goes a long way and will keep for a long time. Product purchase probability: 5 stars. I love all things McCormick and this rub is no exception. It always has a place in my kitchen cabinet.
Final rating: 4.7 stars. This is THE rub to always have on hand.
