‘Dr. Laura quits’ is something her foes always wanted to hear. Last night, Dr. Laura quits speculation paid off, as Dr. Laura quit officially over the n-word controversy. Ever since she used the n-word multiple times on her show, the controversial radio host was under fire. Sponsors were dropping out, and she was facing charges of racism every day on editorial pages. The doctor had survived many bouts of backlash in her heyday, though this was finally too much to handle. Yet to her, the big news isn’t that Dr. Laura quits over the n-word, but that she got her First Amendment rights back.
On Larry King Live, Dr. Laura Schlessinger once again addressed her use of the n-word, and had much more to discuss. She announced that at the end of this year, her long running radio show will end, as she will not renew her contract.
But the Dr. Laura quits decision was not framed by the doctor as a sad thing. Rather, she said that it allowed her to gain her First Amendment rights back. Now that the n-word issue has driven her out, Schlessinger will now be able to say “what’s on my mind and in my heart.”
This kind of Dr. Laura quits announcement may not seem surprising to many. Defiant to the end, she explained that she would not let “some special interest group” silence “a voice of dissent.” Although she apologized the day after using the n-word 11 times, she was less apologetic about the situation this time.
While saying the n-word last week, Schlessinger defended it with the age-old complaint that African-Americans could say it, but whites could not. The negative responses of the last week have only proven that point. She saw it as a double standard, yet the vast majority of listeners and pundits saw her as being racist.
Those charges have led her to resign from radio, although the Dr. Laura quits announcement may have still been long overdue for opposition. When she was accused of making homophobic remarks a decade ago, she was able to stay on the air. Even now, she will likely stay on until her contract expires in four months.
Although Dr. Laura quits, she will still have plenty of time left to use her restricted First Amendment rights on her show. This likely will not be her last word on the subject, while some would probably want her to leave now, before she makes it worse.
But despite her newfound exhaustion with radio, she still has a few months left to say goodbye. Afterwards, she can likely find another public forum or show, like Don Imus did after his racial commentary died down.
