Come on, vamonos, everybody let’s go! It’s time to celebrate Dora the Explorer’s 10 year anniversary!
As part of a major celebration extravaganza (ABC News reports that Dora and her posse will ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange today), Nickelodeon will air an hour long special, Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure, followed by a mini-documentary about the show.
The 12 minute Dora documentary will feature celebs such as Selma Hayek, Soledad O’Brien, Anderson Cooper and View stars Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd.
Over the past decade, the character of Dora the Explorer has traveled all over the world, teaching preschoolers a Spanish word or two along the way. But some of her moments have been more stellar than others.
In celebration of Dora’s 10 years on the air, here are the top 5 Dora the Explorer moments:
Dora visits the North Pole-2002. She’s been all over the globe, so it was no wonder Dora would eventually hit the North Pole. In “A present for Santa” it’s Christmas time as Dora treks to the North Pole to visit Santa (Swiper even gets some Christmas spirit and returns a present he swiped). Christmas fun ensues including a sing along of “Feliz Navidad”. In later years, Dora takes on Scrooge in “Dora’s Christmas Carol Adventure”.
Dora becomes a big sister-2005. In the episode “Big Sister” Dora, the 7 year old finally gets a sibling- actually two! Mami gives birth to twins in 2005- now if only she would give them some names!
Dora gets a male counterpart- 2006. 3 and 4 year old boys like Dora, but by the time they hit kindergarten, Dora can seem about as appealing as a Disney Princess. Enter Diego, Dora’s ultra cool cousin who has his own animal rescue center. He’s the male Dora-and he’s PETA friendly!
Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom – 2009. Dora’s not just an explorer- in the eyes of a preschooler she’s practically a superhero. In this fairytale adventure- the second of the “crystal’ trilogy- Dora defeats the greedy king and brings some color back into the pale kingdom (and I’m not just talking her spicy language). This adventure was so big it warranted its own primetime time slot.
Dora gets a tween makeover- 2009. Some parents were up in arms at the pop-star looking “tween” version of Dora when her image was released in March, 2009. But it didn’t hurt sales of the accompanying line of Mattel toys.
And a bonus top Dora the Explorer moment:
Dora rings the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange- August, 2010.
Only a privileged few get this honor. Dora has definitely hit the big time.
Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure will premiere on Sunday, August 15th at 8:00 PM on the cable network, Nickelodeon.
