Who does not want a nice big ice cream cone after a hot summer day? There is nothing better than stopping at your local ice cream stand. What if you are simply trying to eat better? Do you want to join the family for ice cream but do not want to sacrifice your diet? There are options for you. Two of my favorites are Dole Whip and Only 8 soft serve flavors.
Dole Whip has been around longer than Only 8 and seems to be more common (it is in fact served all over Disneyland and Disney World). Dole Whip claims to be low-fat (or non-fat for some flavors), cholesterol-free, lactose-free and containing no trans-fat. The nutritional facts seem almost good to be true.
Nutritional Information is as follows for a ½ cup in the fruit flavors (orange, strawberry, raspberry, mango and pineapple):
0.0-0.5 grams of fat
35mg of sodium
18 grams of carbs
15-18 grams of sugar
0 grams of protein
For the chocolate or vanilla versions:
2.5-3 grams of fat
75-80mg of sodium
18 grams of carbs
13 grams of sugar
0-1 grams of protein
Dole Whip is quite delicious and can really satisfy a sweet tooth on a summer day. While no ice cream is “good for you”, Dole Whip helps satisfy a sweet tooth without sacrificing and entire days worth of calories. Generally when ordering a Dole Whip I try and add fresh fruit as a topping if I add something.
Only 8 is a little less common than Dole Whip from what I have seen. One advantage that Only 8 has is that it is offered in the standard chocolate and vanilla but any flavoring can be added to make it any of 24 different soft serve flavors. Of course the syrup used to flavor the Only 8 will add some calories and sugar but not nearly as much as if you were eating full fat and calorie soft-serve.
Nutritional Information for a ½ cup serving:
0 grams of fat
40 mg of sodium
7 grams of carbs
7 grams of sugar
1 gram of protein
It is easy to see that from a nutritional standpoint Only 8 has the advantage. It also tastes delicious. Again adding some fresh fruit is a good way to keep it healthy. I do however love sprinkles so add those quite a bit.
Only 8 is also gluten-free, lactose-free and suitable for most diabetics.
Stop by your local ice cream shop and ask for a Dole Whip or an Only 8 today. I promise you will not be disappointed.
