For some, it is better not to get rich; in fact, for most! It takes an attitude to make money beyond our needs. If we do not get our priorities right, we can lose our moorings, get trapped in a life of make-believe & rue the missed chances of a wholesome life!
It could be an irony that the rich lose their focus sooner than the poor on sustainable family values & living. They get carried away by a life of trappings & attract the wrong company. The latter looks at the money than at the person! Most do not know what to believe & even treat all with suspicion that they are after their wealth!
Values change; knowingly or otherwise. Our relationships with our close family members alter over time & they also are not left out of the changed environment. Mostly, children get spoilt with money easy come, easy go! The value systems for the rich are different; they get used to a life of high society where anything goes, literally. The children, when at a vulnerable age, cannot make a wise choice. They are easily misled by those waiting to take advantage of them.
It is tough for most to lead a normal life after acquiring wealth or profess the advantages of thrift when the money is flowing out of all pores! If you live it up, one is showing off; lead a life of thrift, one is taken as stingy! It requires equanimity to find balance & spend the money wisely.
All assets & liabilities balance at the end! Assets can give real pain if not managed properly. One requires tact to reward those who earn them through their efforts. The wealth attracts like flies to honey! Opportunities are touted & a wrong decision can wipe out the wealth, overnight! Those who made the wealth can make wise decisions but not those who inherit it! The latter can find themselves lost to make a living from scratch, after the wipe-out!
Wealth, without the basic value systems, can bring despair. Learning hard facts of life for those who inherit the wealth does not come easy as many are carried away & lose their moorings once easy money is there for the picking. How many can think about ethics & hard work when all needs & even more are met without much effort? Wealth tends to disappear down couple of generations. Families become dysfunctional, with hedonistic life-styles the order of the day, grief is sure to follow.
Pursuit of wealth becomes all-consuming for some but they hardly lead to a life of meaning for their descendents. That also applies to countries; those endowed with great natural resources are similarly affected as the people lose their drive & hunger to get ahead through other more enduring life options.
Ultimately, only a life of principles & hard-work can be rewarding & meaningful. To enjoy wealth by not creating it ourselves can lead us to grief; make us lose our moorings & drift without purpose. Wealth has to be managed in all respects right down to how to get the maximum returns & by benefiting the society at large; it has to shared with those in need, giving back to society on time & with a heart. Otherwise, it is better to avoid the efforts, as wealth can become a curse without our knowing on time! But how many pause to think when the music plays to drown-out the harsh realties!
